Indeed. The "rapid" live tests don't seem very reliable:
Concordia University coronavirus ‘outbreak’ attributed to more than 50 ‘false positives’

...

Officials said the high number of “false positives” was “not entirely uncommon” because the rapid testing machine has about an 80% accuracy rate.

Because of the test results, the Orange County Health Care Agency advised the university to stop using the antigen test for asymptomatic individuals. Instead, the university will use the PCR molecular test, which is processed in an outside lab.

In other news:
California coronavirus cases spike to new daily high. ‘This is the start of the Thanksgiving bump’

California has again demolished a daily record for newly confirmed coronavirus cases, continuing a relentless onslaught of infections that has already sent more people to the hospital than at any point during the pandemic.

The state reported 34,490 new daily coronavirus cases Monday, a figure stratospherically higher than any daily case count, according to data compiled by The Times.

So large is the gap between Monday’s report and the previous single-day record — set Friday, when 22,369 cases were tallied — that the difference of the two numbers, 12,121, would have ranked among California’s highest before the latest surge.

The record-shattering report coincides with when officials said they expected to begin seeing the consequences of travel and gatherings for the Thanksgiving holiday. The numbers also may foreshadow a time when daily infection counts equaling the size of a small city could be more the norm than the exception.

“I would say this is the start of the Thanksgiving bump,” Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said.

The latest increases, she said during a briefing Monday, “reflect actions we took in late November, and we can’t take those actions back. What we can do is change our actions today so that, two to three weeks from now, we’re not reporting a similarly disastrous cascade of events.”

Slight correction - it's people who have had anaphylactic reactions. If you carry an epi-pen, don't get the vaccine, otherwise, ignore it.

A Republican member of the Ohio House of Representatives who contracted COVID-19 skirted public health guidance, potentially exposing fellow lawmakers and staff to the new coronavirus that causes the disease.

Democratic members and staff, meanwhile, say they were never informed of Rep. Stephen Hambley’s positive diagnosis, despite his appearances at floor sessions and committee hearings after testing positive.

At least four lawmakers (two Democrats and two Republicans) who attended a Dec. 2 House Finance Committee hearing alongside Hambley have since contracted COVID-19. The definitive source of their infections is not known.

Hambley received positive results from two tests taken on Nov. 22 and Nov. 28, he said in an interview Wednesday.

Gov. Mike DeWine said Thursday that about 12,000 fans will be allowed to attend next Monday’s Cleveland Browns football game in spite of an ongoing nighttime coronavirus curfew.

During a televised coronavirus briefing, DeWine said the Ohio Department of Health will issue a variance allowing fans to attend the Browns game at FirstEnergy Stadium, as well as other games being held by the Cincinnati Bengals, Columbus Crew, and University of Cincinnati Bearcats this weekend, without violating his administration’s 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew.
Because attending a Browns game is more important than anyone's health.

Biden To Have Entire WH East And West Wings Showered With Disinfectant Right After Trump Leaves

President-elect Joe Biden and his transition team are reportedly already making plans to ensure that the White House, which has been plagued with a series of COVID-19 infections thanks to President Donald Trump’s disregard for protective measures against the virus, is safe enough for the 78-year-old Biden to move in come January 20.

According to Politico, Biden’s transition team will have the White House fully cleaned by General Services Administration (GSA) staffers hours after Trump leaves the building.

A spokesperson for the GSA told Politico that the staffers will “thoroughly clean and disinfect” every area of the East and West Wings that people have touched, including furniture and doorknobs.

A private contractor will also reportedly provide “disinfectant misting services.”

Nicole Lurie, one of Biden’s COVID-19 advisers, told Politico that the operation will be “the polar opposite of what you’re seeing now.”

“I think the social penalties for non-mask wearing will be great,” said Lurie. “Instead of people being ridiculed for wearing masks, they’ll be pressured in the other direction.”

That's an interesting case. I can't imagine that the head of the White House security office wouldn't have health insurance though, and some kind of compensation scheme if it qualifies as a work-related injury. At a minimum he should qualify for Social Security disability, although that may not cover all of his expenses. That's awful though. I wonder if he had diabetes. I didn't know that losing limbs due to Covid was a thing.

‘We want them infected’: Trump appointee demanded ‘herd immunity’ strategy, emails reveal

Then-HHS science adviser Paul Alexander called for millions of Americans to be infected as means of fighting Covid-19.

A top Trump appointee repeatedly urged top health officials to adopt a "herd immunity" approach to Covid-19 and allow millions of Americans to be infected by the virus, according to internal emails obtained by a House watchdog and shared with POLITICO.

“There is no other way, we need to establish herd, and it only comes about allowing the non-high risk groups expose themselves to the virus. PERIOD," then-science adviser Paul Alexander wrote on July 4 to his boss, Health and Human Services assistant secretary for public affairs Michael Caputo, and six other senior officials.

"Infants, kids, teens, young people, young adults, middle aged with no conditions etc. have zero to little risk….so we use them to develop herd…we want them infected…" Alexander added.

"t may be that it will be best if we open up and flood the zone and let the kids and young folk get infected" in order to get "natural immunity…natural exposure," Alexander wrote on July 24 to Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn, Caputo and eight other senior officials. Caputo subsequently asked Alexander to research the idea, according to emails obtained by the House Oversight Committee's select subcommittee on coronavirus.

Alexander also argued that colleges should stay open to allow Covid-19 infections to spread, lamenting in a July 27 email to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield that “we essentially took off the battlefield the most potent weapon we had...younger healthy people, children, teens, young people who we needed to fastly [sic] infect themselves, spread it around, develop immunity, and help stop the spread.”

Iowa using $10M in virus aid to fund state police officers

Gov. Kim Reynolds’ administration is using $10 million in federal pandemic relief funds to pay the salaries of state police officers, who have largely not been directly involved in Iowa’s virus response.

The expense is listed in a state report as going toward “State Government COVID staffing” at the Iowa Department of Public Safety. The report claims the money will support payroll expenses for employees “whose services were diverted to a substantially different use as a result of COVID-19.”

Department spokeswoman Debra McClung noted that the spending is allowable under revised Treasury Department guidance that stipulates that payroll expenses for public safety employees are presumed to qualify as pandemic-related. However, she didn’t provide examples of how any duties had changed.

City gets public backlash for spending federal COVID relief money on golf course clubhouse

Plans to use pandemic relief funding to build what leaders call a "modest" clubhouse on Forest Lake's city-owned golf course have become the target of criticism and outrage among residents and local business owners.

Mayor Mara Bain defended the decision to use 10% of the $1.5 million the city received from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to replace the small pro shop at Castlewood Golf Course because it would help with "social distancing."

"Castlewood had unprecedented use this summer," Bain said. "If we're able to more safely serve those residents, I think it meets the need."

EXCLUSIVE: Tennessee wastes millions on no-bid COVID contract with politically connected company

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee's team wasted millions of dollars on COVID-19 testing promised by a politically connected company - and taxpayers got nothing for their money, an exclusive NewsChannel 5 investigation has discovered.

Over the objections of career state employees, Tennessee Health Commission Lisa Piercey steered a $26.5 million, no-bid contract to a Utah company with no health care experience -- after a Republican political consultant pitched a contract to the governor's office.

In the end, just as the career state employees had warned, the deal collapsed -- and the Lee administration paid the company almost $6 million to get out of the contract.

"This is frankly worse than our worst fears," said state Sen. Jeff Yarbro, a Nashville Democrat who had expressed concerns in the early days of the coronavirus crisis about potentially unaccountable spending as state government responded.

Chilean president handed $3,500 fine for mask-less selfie with stranger on beach

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Chilean President Sebastian Pinera was slapped with a $3,500 fine on Friday after posing for a selfie on the beach with a bystander without wearing a mask as required during the coronavirus pandemic, health authorities said.

Chile has strict rules on mask wearing in all public places and violations are punishable with sanctions that include fines and even jail terms.

Pinera apologized then turned himself in shortly after the selfie surfaced on social media in early December.

The president explained he had been walking alone along the beach near his home in the posh Chilean seaside town of Cachagua when a woman recognized him and asked for a photo together.

As companies race to develop a COVID-19 vaccine and countries scramble to secure doses, questions about the use of pork products — banned by some religious groups — has raised concerns about the possibility of disrupted immunization campaigns.

Pork-derived gelatin has been widely used as a stabilizer to ensure vaccines remain safe and effective during storage and transport. Some companies have worked for years to develop pork-free vaccines: Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis has produced a pork-free meningitis vaccine, while Saudi- and Malaysia-based AJ Pharma is currently working on one of their own.

A number of European countries have or are considering banning travel from the UK to prevent the spread of a more infectious variant of coronavirus.

Both the Netherlands and Belgium have suspended flights. Trains to Belgium have also been banned.

Italy's foreign minister has indicated his government plans to ban flights. France and Germany are reportedly planning similar action.

The new variant has spread fast in London and south-East England.

How Vietnam fought a pandemic and won

A year has passed since the world knew about the existence of Covid-19 and nations were brought to their knees.

The pandemic has wreaked havoc in over 200 countries and territories, infecting around 77 million people and killing over 1.7 million.

Even major powers like the U.S., the U.K., France, Russia, and India have seen first-hand how a virus could infect a population rapidly, overwhelming hospitals and forcing governments to impose lengthy lockdowns in the hope of keeping the infection at bay.

But some countries have been outliers, praised globally for their excellent pandemic control and keeping losses to the economy and human lives to a minimum.

Vietnam, despite sharing a 1,200-km border with China, has stood out among those success stories, having recorded only 1,414 cases and 35 deaths.

The story of Vietnam's successful Covid-19 fight is hardly a miracle however: what it did was take some simple and straightforward measures like imposing travel restrictions, contact tracing and social distancing.

But what made them work were the government’s effective leadership and social unity and cohesion.

As 2020 comes to a close, we look back at how Vietnam fought the pandemic and emerged victor, and the lessons it has to offer the world.
