Forget oil: Here's why gold is key to Venezuela's crisis-stricken government
...
What's going on in Venezuela?
Late last month, opposition leader Juan Guaido took to the streets of the capital city and declared himself as the rightful interim president.

Venezuela is now in a situation whereby it has an internationally-recognized government — with no control over state functions — running parallel to Maduro's administration.
Trump and his cronies should stay out of "regime change" and "nation building" ... it seems that they suck at it.

Have we ever been "good" at it since Japan?

Does Japan even count?
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

Japan is the one success story.

The other two major axis powers as follows.

The Italians did it themselves before the war was over.

The Germans, it's complicated due to division and reunification. The USA can't take full credit.

We have been putting sanctions on Venezuala since Obama signed the S.2142 - Venezuela Defense of Human Rights and Civil Society Act of 2014

In 2016 Obama signed the S.2845 - Venezuela Defense of Human Rights and Civil Society Extension Act of 2016

There have also been Executive orders and sanctions over the last half decade.

Oil Export Ban Lifted As Obama Signs Spending Bill

Given the above, I believe we (USA) can HARDLY be considered an 'uninterested observer' of the 'fall of the socialist state of Venezuela.'

Given time, socialism will die by it's own hand...but we sure seem to have been activly trying to help it along...for what?
Or Who?
Was it, "To make the west safe for crony Capitalism democracy?"
Enquiring minds want to know...

Again: Full Disclosure: I do not like or believe in Socialism. I think it legitimizes theft (of resources from those that have to those that don't), encourages sloth, and essentially discourages hard work and innovation.

What I find disgusting is what seems to be happening.

We are recognizing a guy who appointed himself president of Venezuela.

This smacks of another round of 'nation building' ...
Maybe another round of military intervention...

Because it worked so well in the Iraq, Syria, and Lybia...right?

Portuguese bank halted $1.2 billion transfer of Venezuela funds: lawmaker

CARACAS (Reuters) - Portugal-based Novo Banco halted a transfer of $1.2 billion by the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to banks in Uruguay, a Venezuelan legislator said on Tuesday, a day after the opposition denounced what they called the theft of public funds.

Opposition leader Juan Guaido, who most European and Western Hemisphere nations have recognized as the country’s legitimate leader, said on Monday that authorities were trying to move up to $1.2 billion to banks in Uruguay.

Countries around the world are pressuring Maduro to resign amid a hyperinflationary economic crisis that has led millions to emigrate. His adversaries warn that officials are seeking to drain state coffers ahead of a potential change of government.

“They attempted to move Venezuelan government financial assets in Novo Banco in Portugal worth some $1.2 billion toward Uruguayan banks,” said legislator Carlos Paparoni during a congressional session on Tuesday.

“I’m pleased to inform the Venezuelan people that this transaction has until now been halted, protecting the resources of all Venezuelans.”

Maduro: Oil, gold & other riches behind Trump’s Venezuela crusade
Venezuela’s natural reserves, such as oil, gas, and gold, encourage the US to seek regime change there, President Maduro told RT, saying he won’t be remembered as a leader who showed weakness and ignorance to his people.

“What ‘casus belli’ does Donald Trump have against Venezuela? Venezuelan oil. Venezuela’s riches – gold, gas, diamonds, iron, water,” Maduro said in an exclusive interview with RT Spanish. The remarks come as Western nations pile overwhelming pressure on the Latin American country.

Admitting that “hyperinflation caused tremendous damage to us,” he suggested that the resources “kidnapped by the world” be freed for a national recovery. Aside from that, the government will work on keeping prices as low as possible and will stabilize the national currency rate.

US sanctions also did their job, Maduro said. He labelled Washington’s restrictions against state-run oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) and its US subsidiary Citgo illegal, saying Caracas will respond. “Measures like these have never been introduced against any other country,” stated Maduro.
...
As Bush-era arch-hawk John Bolton put it, the US had “a lot at stake” in Venezuela’s affairs. “It will make a big difference to the United States economically if we could have American oil companies invest in and produce the oil capabilities in Venezuela,” he told Fox Business host Trish Regan.
So, its all about Oil?
If so, I am glad he admits it...
The US has steadily toughened sanctions on Venezuela in recent years in an effort to weaken the government and destabilize economy. Some international observers believe the sanctions and economic war hit Venezuela’s people in the first place, contributing to the lack of medicine, malnutrition and mortality.
Suprise, Suprise, Suprise...

More news...
U.S. offers sanctions relief to Venezuelan military who betray Maduro
CUCUTA, COLOMBIA Washington on Wednesday offered relief from punishing sanctions to Venezuelan military officers who betray Nicolás Maduro.

In a tweet, U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton urged military officers to back interim President Juan Guaidó or suffer the consequences.

“The U.S. will consider sanctions off-ramps for any Venezuelan senior military officer that stands for democracy and recognizes the constitutional government of President Juan Guaidó,” Bolton wrote. “If not, the international financial circle will be closed off completely. Make the right choice!”
Bolton still has that old bluster...

Pompeo: US Military Obligated to “Take Down” the Iranians in Venezuela
As a U.S.-backed effort to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro continues,U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said late Wednesday that Hezbollah “has active cells” in Venezuela—a claim that was immediately scrutinized and compared with the second Bush administration’s lies to justify the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Seriously?
Hezbollah, a political and militant Shi’ite Muslim group based in Lebanon, has been on the U.S. State Department’s “Designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations” list since 1997. In the interview with Fox Business, Pompeo, who previously served as President Donald Trump’s CIA director, also charged that Iran and Cuba are strongly influencing the country.

“The Cubans invaded Venezuela. The Cubans have been controlling the security apparatus, protecting Maduro, and destroying the way of life for the Venezuelan people for an awfully long time,” he said. “People don’t recognize that Hezbollah has active cells—the Iranians are impacting the people of Venezuela and throughout South America. We have an obligation to take down that risk for America.
This strikes me as a desperation measure, after their guy Juan FAILED to win the support of the military, after pronouncing himself president...

He was busy explaining how the humanitarian aid that the opposition is planning to cross into Venezuela from Colombia is part of a macabre plan cooked up by Washington to intervene in the South American nation.
Interesting, considering: Venezuela says plane from Miami delivered weapons for use by enemies of Maduro
Venezuelan authorities say a U.S.-owned air freight company delivered a crate of assault weapons earlier this week to the international airport in Valencia to be used in “terrorist actions” against the embattled government of Nicolás Maduro.

An air freight company, 21 Air LLC, based in Greensboro, N.C., operates the Boeing 767 aircraft that the Venezuelans allege was used in the arms transfer. The flight originated in Miami on Feb 3.

The Boeing 767 has made dozens of flights between Miami International Airport and destinations in Colombia and Venezuela since Jan. 11, a flight tracking service shows, often returning to Miami for only a few hours before flying again to South America.
...
A senior Venezuelan security official, Bolivarian National Guard Gen. Endes Palencia Ortiz, who is the nation’s vice minister of citizen security, said authorities found 19 assault weapons, 118 ammunition cartridges, and 90 military-grade radio antennas, among other items.
And yes, that is hardly enough "guns and ammo" to do jack shit with, which smells right there.

However, consider one more thing from the last paragraph.
...
Curiously, one of the figures in the Reagan administration instrumental in delivering support to the contras, former assistant secretary of state Elliott Abrams, was named by President Donald Trump late last month as his special envoy overseeing policy toward Venezuela.
Yep, our new "special envoy for Venezuela" was convicted for lying to congress, and then, later pardoned by (Pappa) Bush.

US diplomat convicted over Iran-Contra appointed special envoy for Venezuela
...
Abrams is widely remembered in Central America, but particularly from his time in the Reagan administration, when he tried to whitewash a massacre of a thousand men, women and children by US-funded death squads in El Salvador, when he was assistant secretary of state for human rights.:doglaugh:
I swear, I can't make this shit up...okay stop digressing.
He shrugged off the reports as communist propaganda, and insisted: “The administration’s record in El Salvador is one of fabulous achievement.”
...
More than a decade later, working as special Middle East adviser to former president George W Bush, Abrams was an enthusiastic advocate of the Iraq invasion. He was in the White House at the time of the abortive coup in 2002 against Hugo Chávez. The Observer reported that Abrams gave the green light to the putsch, another an inspector general enquiry found no “wrongdoing” by US officials.

That was not enough to erase his reputation as the assistant secretary of dirty wars. The message sent by his return to the front rank of US diplomacy will not be missed in Caracas.
If you care to look, he has a track record for mixing "humanitarian aid" with military hardware.
...
Abrams assumed his position at ARA in July 1985. Under Shultz, he was responsible for Central American issues and became the Reagan Administration's chief advocate on Capitol Hill for U.S. aid to the contra rebels in Nicaragua, which had been cut off in October 1984 by the Boland Amendment. During Abrams' tenure at ARA, humanitarian aid for the contras and later lethal aid were lawfully resumed.
...
In early 1986, the NHAO resupply operation at Ilopango became merged with the North-Secord operation there supplying weapons to the contras. The same flight crews that delivered the NHAO humanitarian aid also flew the lethal resupply flights. The same aircraft were used, and the U.S. Government-sponsored humanitarian supplies were stored in the same warehouse as the weapons at the Ilopango airport. Rodriguez was the manager of the resupply effort at Ilopango. He coordinated the arrival and departure of both the lethal and humanitarian resupply flights, controlled the resupply material in the warehouse and arranged for housing for the flight crews.13

World Exclusive: Venezuela moves to replace U.S. executives on Citgo board - sources
(Reuters) - Venezuelan state-run oil company PDVSA is taking steps to remove at least two American executives from the board of directors of its U.S. refining subsidiary, Citgo Petroleum Corp, according to people close to the matter.

Citgo is facing unprecedented challenges to its finances and management after the U.S. government last week imposed tough sanctions on Petroleos de Venezuela, known as PDVSA, designed to prevent oil revenue from going to leftist President Nicolas Maduro. The United States and dozens of other nations have refused to recognise Maduro, viewing his reelection last year to another six-year term as fraudulent.

Venezuelan's self-proclaimed president Juan Guaido is setting up bank accounts with U.S. help that would take income accrued by Citgo, Venezuela's top foreign asset, to finance an interim government. Maduro has denounced Guaido as a U.S. puppet who is seeking to foment a coup.
Well...he is.

And in other news...
US to Push Anti-Maduro Resolution Amid Fears of Venezuela Intervention - Report
Earlier this week, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro called Washington's decision to send humanitarian relief to the crisis-struck South American country a "political stunt" and a pretext for invasion.

The US plans to vote for a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution which voices "deep concern" about the humanitarian situation in Venezuela, including "recent attempts to block the delivery of humanitarian aid", Bloomberg reports.

According to a copy of the document obtained by Bloomberg, the resolution also calls for the "immediate start of a political process leading to free, fair, and credible presidential elections" in Venezuela.

For the resolution to pass, it needs nine votes in favour and no votes in opposition from any of the five permanent UNSC members, including Russia, the US, the UK, France and China.

Earlier on Sunday, a diplomatic source told Sputnik that Russia has prepared its own draft UN Security Council resolution "in support of Venezuela".

Meanwhile back in DC: Dem tells Venezuela’s Guaidó: ‘You don't get to authorize US military interventions’
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) on Saturday warned Venezuelan opposition leader and self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaidó against any attempt to authorize U.S. military force to strengthen his claim to power.

“Mr. Guaido, you can proclaim yourself leader of Venezuela but you don’t get to authorize US military interventions. Only the US Congress can do that. We will not,” Khanna tweeted.

The tweet came in response to an interview Guaidó gave on Friday in which he refused to rule out allowing U.S. forces to help push Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro from power, according to AFP.

Well, what about this guy Juan Guaidó?

Juan Guaido Promises Oil Deals for US Gas Giants If He Takes Power
The US-backed Venezuelan “government” of Juan Guaidó has said there will be plenty of money to be made for Wall Street under a government without the current President, Nicolas Maduro.

According to reports, this offer was made during a meeting between US officials and delegates of the Guaidó cabinet in Washington. Apparently, Guaidó has promised that if he should take control of the actual levers of state power in Venezuela he would end the control over Venezuelan oil projects currently given to the state oil company, PDVSA.

The current law in Venezuela states that any projects involving Venezuelan oil that PDVSA must have, at least, a 51% stake. According to the delegates in Washington, this is the best way to reinvigorate Venezuelan oil production.
He seems to be just the guy US corporate oil interest's need...

Venezuela Oil Czar Courts India After $20 Billion U.S. Hit
(Bloomberg) -- Venezuela’s oil minister made a surprise appearance at an energy event in India as the embattled OPEC producer seeks closer ties with major crude customers in the face of crippling U.S. sanctions.

Manuel Quevedo, who’s also the head of state producer Petroleos de Venezuela SA, said on Monday his nation wants to sell more crude to India, and that U.S. measures have resulted in a $20 billion loss to the Latin American country’s economy.

His arrival in India coincides with swirling speculation over the future of the Venezuelan oil industry after the U.S., its largest customer, effectively blocked imports of its crude. PDVSA is seeking to retain buyers in other big consuming countries such as China after American refiners halted purchases. The U.S. wants Maduro to cede power to an interim government led by Juan Guaido, a lawmaker who claims he’s the country’s rightful leader.[/quote]

Cuba says U.S. moving special forces, preparing Venezuelan intervention
HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba said on Thursday the United States was moving special forces closer to Venezuela as part of a covert plan to intervene in the chaotic South American country using the pretext of a humanitarian crisis.
...
U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has been trying to pressure Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to step down and hand over power to Juan Guaido, the head of Venezuela’s National Assembly.

Guaido invoked a constitutional provision to assume the presidency three weeks ago, arguing that Maduro’s re-election last year was a sham.
...
“Between February 6 and 10 military transport aircraft have flown to the Rafael Miranda Airport of Puerto Rico, the San Isidro Air Base, in the Dominican Republic and to other strategically located Caribbean islands, probably without knowledge of the governments of those nations,” the declaration said.

“These flights originated in American military installations from which units of Special Operations and Marine Corps operate, which are used for covert actions,” it said.

U.S. special envoy for Venezuela Elliott Abrams, asked about the Cuban statement at an event in Washington, said “it is a new lie.”
Coming from a guy who was convicted of lying to congress, well, I guess he should know right?
