Huh, never heard of that before. Or the 88. They like their number games. Wonder if they’d consider giving up the hate and taking up sudoku instead.

That reminds me, I never understood the attraction of doing sudoku puzzles manually, despite their worldwide popularity. Must just be me, then.

Once Upon A Time, for a graduate course in computer science, I wrote a computer program to solve sudoku puzzles. Trivially easy to do.

And then I submitted my answer to the Euler Project, problem #96: https://projecteuler.net/problem=96

A question in number theory was recently answered: What is the minimum number of clues (initial givens) needed to specify a unique solution?

Answer: 17. There are no 16-clue sudoku puzzles.

See for example: http://www.sudokuwiki.org/17_Clue_Proof

The problem with that particular mathematical proof is that is was done by computer and is very long and no human has yet verified it is 100 percent correct, although no one has yet found any flaws in it either.

An unanswered question remains: Is there a sudoku puzzle that cannot be solved without backtracking (using trial and error)?

My conjecture is no, but I was not able to prove that within the time limit of that particular graduate course.

To a mathematician, the interesting thing about sudoku puzzles is that the number theory inherent in them has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the puzzles use numbers. Any group of nine symbols would accomplish the same result suffice. In other words, there is no arithmetic involved, and yet there are interesting questions from a number theory point of view. That's the part that fascinates me, even though I have little interest in solving them by hand.

Speaking of things I don't understand, why did I post that in the thread for shitposts? It was soooo off topic.

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Perhaps Radley Balko doesn't see the connection to civil liberties (and gun rights in particular) because he doesn't understand the inherent self-contradiction (not to mention hypocrisy) of the kind of "diversity" promoted by his fellow liberals.

Radley Balko's tweet doesn't qualify as a shitpost. It belongs in the Dumbth thread.
