- A federal judge sentenced a Kentucky man to 30 days in prison for assaulting Sen. Rand Paul in an attack that left the politician with several broken ribs.
- Rene Boucher, 60, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, must also serve one year of supervised release following his prison stay and pay a $10,000 fine.
- During the period of supervised release, Boucher will also be ordered to serve 100 hours of community service.
- Boucher expressed remorse and apologized to the Paul family.
[…]
On Nov. 3, Paul was mowing his yard wearing headphones when Boucher claimed Paul stacked brush onto a pile near the victim's property, prosecutors said. Boucher, a physician like Paul, ran onto Paul's property and tackled him.
Paul suffered multiple fractured ribs and subsequently contracted pneumonia, prosecutors said.
On three occasions before the attack, Boucher had cleaned up yard debris placed on the line between the two men's properties, Baker said in a telephone interview. On Nov. 3, it appeared to Boucher that a fresh pile of yard debris was being reconstructed "and Dr. Boucher lost his temper momentarily," Baker said.

No kidding. 30 days in jail for attacking a sitting U.S. Senator? Talk about a slap on the wrist.

I wonder if there was also a lawsuit? Paul would be well within his rights to sue the pants off the guy. Perhaps they settled out of court on the compensation. I would expect that he incurred significant medical expenses as well as pain and suffering, and lost work time (although as a senator he gets paid anyway). Legal expenses too, most likely.
I'm guessing 6 figures at least. Something north of $100,000.

Boucher told the jury he attacked Paul after watching the senator begin forming a brush pile near their property line.
The day before the attack, Boucher said, he had burned another brush pile Paul had created near the boundary. He doused that pile with gasoline and set it on fire, Boucher said. An explosion burned his face, neck and arms, and Boucher said he was still in severe pain when he attacked Paul the next day. Boucher testified he had hauled away previous brush piles accumulated by Paul without asking the senator.
They needed a wall.

Well that also settles the question about motive.

Reads like the guy is a rich sociopath.
Now he is a poorer sociopath.

Unfortunately it wasn't about national level politics. It was about very local politics. Like, fucking goddamn neighbor won't keep his fucking yard clean level politics.
