We might actually care if the Russians take away our French wine.

The Ruskies don't drink water . . . vodka . . . they drink vodka . . .

We can find american substitutes for most European products. Wine from California. Beer from Michigan. Water from Detroit.

We already spend nearly twice as much on Medicare and Medicaid as we do on defense. Include private spending and the USA spends $3.3 trillion on health care, over 5 times as much as we spend on defense. IOW cut defense spending to$0 and we expand government health care by just 50% and aren't even in the ballpark of "Medicaid for all".

No I get why Poland and Czechs want NATO, I am asking what is the benefit for USA?
Originally to prevent World War 3.

The thinking is that, if there were a major war in Europe again, we would end up getting dragged into it anyway, just like the last two times. It's the old "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" idea.

How many here are aware that there is a competitive element to Medicare that (in theory) places pressure to lower prices and increase quality?

Whether it is working is not something I am prepared with enough information to answer. But I found it interesting when I learned it was there.

How to pay for "Medicare for all"?

No fumbling around either. Remarkably forthright for a politician.
Just pay for it.

Thank you for clearing that up.

Donald Trump should introduce a public option and watch heads melt.

Then he can take credit for doing more for the poors than Obama and neuter probably the best Dem issue going into 2020.

If he did that, I might even consider voting for him. No lie.

The people who cite lower costs in other countries as evidence that "medicare for all" would be cheaper ignore some huge differences between us and them.
1. US healthcare workers make 50%-300% more than they do in those other countries. How do you force them to take a pay cut to pay for it?
2. We have more of them per capita than other countries. Who's going to lose their jobs to help pay for it?

### Re: My observations on "Medicare for all" (USA politics)

What I've seen ascribed as the main factor in divergent costs , is the utilization /waiting times.

I.e. the NHS runs close to capacity ( hospital beds, MRI machines etc) , resulting in better cost per capita. But backlogs easily (inevitably ) result. And people wait ashes for operations.

The American system is relatively over resourced (say running at 50% capacity) which is pricy, but means you get your procedure Pronto .

It's a case of, no such thing as a free lunch.

You could, theoretically, do a decent comparison of backlogs if you consider people priced out as a persistent backlog. I wonder how it would compare then?
