Undeterred By Violent Protests In France, Trudeau Set To Implement Massive Carbon Tax
Liberal hero and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, undeterred by the massive unrest in France à la the "Yellow Vest" movement, is set to implement a massive federal tax on carbon emissions by April.

As France literally burns from weeks-long protesting over French President Emmanuel Macron's now-abandoned fuel tax, Trudeau is sticking to his Climate Change initiative, which conservative critics say is already crippling Canadian businesses and squeezing the middle class.

Under Trudeau's plan, according to The Washington Times, a national price on carbon emissions of $7.5 a ton will be increased to $37.50 by 2022. By April, a carbon tax will be implemented across the nation, despite fiery opposition from at least four provinces.
Well ya Canadian's voted this douche bag in, you know what to do right?

Why does saving The PlanetTM always seem to involve the rich plundering the poor?

Good question. Perhaps we need a lot of rich and powerful people to jet off somewhere exotic, where they can craft a memo on how the poor shouldn't travel as much.

Because everything involves the rich plundering the poor. It's usually how they got rich in the first place. No reason to stop now.

That is factually incorrect.

More often the rich get rich by producing stuff that the poor want to buy. The rich cannot get rich if no one buys the stuff they produce.

Oh wait, were you being sarcastic (again)? I can't always tell. :P

Zero sum?
Negative sum.

With zero sum (for example poker) the amount of money that comes to the table is exactly what gets up from the table. This is true even with cheating. No money is created or destroyed, it only changes hands.

With plunder, wealth is destroyed in the process of concentrating it in a few hands.

Is it safe to assume everyone here already knows the US economy is neither a negative sum nor a zero sum game?

Stephen Mullanoux weighs in on the 'protests' in France...

There have been over four weeks of rioting in France.

They started in the provinces, but have now spread to the capital.

Initially fomented over fuel price increases as a result of a new climate change fuel tax.

The “yellow vest” protesters’ demands now include an end to other taxes, an increase in the minimum wage — and Macron’s resignation.

Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire recently reported that the cost of the protests could be as high as 0.1% percent of GDP.

With his popularity rating at record lows (recent polls put it at around 26%, on par with Hollande), his capital city burning and the populists he defeated during his stunning electoral victory last year making serious electoral inroads, French President Emmanuel Macron finally caved, and on Tuesday ordered a six month suspension of planned 'fuel taxes' which spurred widespread and destructive protests across France...”
WTF?
Even Trump has better numbers than that....

Washington Examiner
Poland’s Solidarity labor union has joined forces with climate skeptics from America to call for “a restoration of the Scientific Method and the dismissal of ideological dogma” in the study of climate change as part of a joint declaration the union has submitted to the United Nations in partnership with a U.S.-based free-market think tank.

I imagine a carbon tax could be appropriate if the funds were reserved for associated costs. Isn't it a market distortion, so to speak, if the entities that cause environmental harm do not have the cost of repairing or adapting worked into their operating expenses? Otherwise they're effectively being subsidized by the government.

Of course, making sure the money goes where it's supposed to is a task all by itself.

The main purpose, regardless, would be to incentivize less wasteful practices, by keeping them from unilaterally shuffling off expenses to the government or others.

I've never been enthusiastic about a straight up tax, for exactly the reason Doc X suggests. Nonetheless I think something that achieves the above needs to be in place. Charging them directly for cleanups doesn't work, by that time those organizations responsible no longer exist or have no ability to pay. That's easy for them to make sure of. And that's presuming you can identify individual responsibility.
