What the Shutdown Would Look Like
if It Happened in Other Industries
By KEITH COLLINS, ANJALI SINGHVI and TROY GRIGGS JAN. 5, 2019

With the government in shutdown, a large number of federal employees have found themselves either on unpaid leave or working without pay. This is the effect the shutdown would have if the same number of people were laid off from American industries and companies.

The 800,000 federal employees furloughed or working without pay is more than …

It’s more than double the number of people who work for Target …
<boobs???>

The article goes on in this vein for a while. Somehow they want us to gasp at the enormity of the size of the number of people (who will end up getting paid I believe).

But this raises a question ... why the fuck are so many people employed? Who is responsible for this bloat? Is it bloat? Who is accountable?

There are some very basic issues here and they go way beyond some supernumeraries cooling their heels.

I think that the response to the title of the story is "other industries would have their manpower under control"

We the government , in order to form a more perfect electorate  , mandate employment of the people, by the people, for the votes.

Any argument that takes the "shut down" terminology at face value is cockamamie regardless of ideological tendency.

Fucktard wants to call the shut-down a 'strike'.

In previous "shutdowns" the union called it layoffs, which is reasonable. But it certainly is not a "lockout" because the boss (that is the federal government) is not seeking concessions from the union (or the workers against the union).

Indeed, putting pressure on the workers has zero effect on how this goes, because the Democrats don't care (any more than the Republicans cared back when Obama was having "shutdowns").

However, I understand the TSA has been staging a "sick out".

Per FDR, I am uncomfortable with public sector workers being able to unionize/collectively bargain.

FDR won that argument.

The "collective bargaining" does not include rates of pay. Those are set by congress.
The union lobbies of course, but that is not the same thing.

Nor is it legal to go on strike.

How so?

Reading too much Free Republic where it is assumed that Federal employment is just another form of welfare chiseling?
