CNN's Chris Cillizza:
Donald Trump just dunked on Nancy Pelosi's CODEL and yes that is actually the headline
(CNN)Less than 24 hours after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told President Donald Trump that he should reconsider delivering his State of the Union on January 29, the famed counter-puncher struck back. Bigly.
"Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed," Trump wrote to Pelosi in a letter tweeted by White House press secretary Sarah Sanders Thursday afternoon. "In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate."
And then, this dagger: "Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative."
Meanwhile, the govt remains shut down.
Anyone's guess how long this game of chicken will last.
As a reminder: 800,000 federal workers are either furloughed or working without pay today. And they have been doing so for the last (almost) month. Bills aren't being paid. Sacrifices are being made. Real life is happening.
Amid that backdrop, the childish one-upmanship between Trump and Pelosi feels deeply out of touch. But, more than that, it's actively detrimental to the re-opening of the government. No one can argue that the actions of Trump and Pelosi over the last 24 hours have brought us closer to compromise that would re-open the government. Hell, no one can even argue that what's happened between two of the most powerful people in the country has had a neutral impact on the shutdown showdown. This is a bad thing for the country. Period.
What's even more terrifying -- and depressing -- is that neither side seems likely to play the adult in this back-and-forth anytime soon.

Changed the thread title to expand the topic a bit since we don't have a thread specifically about the shutout or shutdown.
Shutdowns don't save the government any money of course. We know this from previous shutdowns. In fact, they have the opposite effect because they end up costing the government more money in the long run. Money that comes either from taxpayers or just added to the national debt for future taxpayers.
So how much gas this shutdown costed future taxpayers so far? Well, this is just a rough estimate:
The Government Shutdown Just Became More Costly Than Trump’s Border Wall
The longest government shutdown ever has likely become more expensive for taxpayers than the thing at the center of it, President Donald Trump’s demand for funding for a border wall.
Bottom line seems to be somewhere around $5 billion in lost economic output for those furloughed workers and rising every day this continues.
A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.

On a side note. Has anyone missed dealing with the "800,000 federal workers" who will eventually get paid anyway?
Begins to beg the question; Just how necessary ARE all of these bureaucrats?
To the 'normal functioning of government' that is...
What percentage of the country do they serve?
I am sure they and their bosses, (and the fiefdom's they work for)
consider themselves indespensible...
however...
Then Skank Of America could start in...

I could feel a little sympathy for the dems if they opposed the wall because they thought that it would be ineffective or too expensive. But they have gone with it being “immoral “. To which my response is “wanting to have control over who enters the country is immoral? Fuck you.”

It would have helped if they opposed it when Obama wanted it.

I mean come on, he cancelled it while she was loaded up on bus probably browsing restaurants in Belgium on Yelp.
And Schiff was with her, it was the crazy-eyes express.

Agreed on both points.
Not to mention the many videos running showing Democrats talking tough on immigration in years past. It's only 'immoral' now "because Trump."
I laughed when I heard about the bus turn around and Trump's suggestion Pelosi "fly commercial." Say what you will about Trump, but at least he punches back.

Actually, no, Pelosi as more to lose.
With every video showing that the Dems supported the wall in the past, that having such actually works, et cetera, she is revealed as the unreasonable one. Schumer is "along for the ride."
Where Trump would fail is if Pelosi actually offered the ~5 billion along with, say, defining the DACA status in the future or an actual reform of immigration, and Trump balked on that.

Pelosi and her backers--and maybe the really liberals who do not like her because she does not believe in committing pogroms to purify the revolution [Get on with it.--Ed.]--probably fear giving Trump any "win." They know the wall will work to the extent numbers will go down. Will it solve illegal immigration?
Does not matter, she and they know Trump will point to it.
They are now--like him--"pot committed" in that there is a danger of backing off. The difference is Pelosi is not in danger of losing her seat. She is probably in her last term as it is. People will forget. People who vote for "my representative" will not care. They do with presidents. Recall George the Elder backing down on his "no new taxes" promise. How many Democrats/Republican congressman suffered?
Anyways, this would be a "win" for Trump, and she and they do not want that to happen.
