Your internet-of-shit smart lightbulb is probably storing your wifi password in the clear, ready to be recovered by wily dumpster-divers ...

I almost bought a few of those. IIR, they were about $20 each, led, 10yr life maybe*. I have an echo in the bedroom (because nothing personal and private ever happens there) and I thought it would be nice to integrate a bit.

But I got a echo socket instead.

*obviously not if people are already throwing them out!

What is the alleged benefit?

I have "dumb" LED bulbs no problems.

No big deal. Before you discard the lightbulb, just do a Hillary on it with a hammer.

You can turn your lights on or off, or dim them or make them brighter without ever getting up from bed or the sofa.

With an Alexa (or Google assistant) you can also tell it play music (such as "Alexa, play jazz") or ask it questions (what's today's weather or others). Order food or other things from the internet all without getting out of bed. I'm probably just scratching the surface here.

OTOH, you can see the downsides if we let ourselves get too dependent on fancy tech.

By the way, here's what happens if you ask Alexa to "open the pod bay doors"

Freaked him out.
