Pictographs can help improve the success rate of written communication there's little doubt, but pictographs replacing written communication is absurd. :)

Weak article, in my opinion (e. g. it misses the evidence that smileys are there to replace absent body language โ€“ the "phatic" part of communication, for pedantic assholes like me) and, strangely (?), the comments are on par.

Now for their intrusion into old-style media, we already had that kind of thing but the reference was to television ("seen on TV" for the ads). So now it's Internet mannerisms, big surprise.
