Flash EOL 2020

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Nuke it from orbit.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

The Adobe folks want to do this but ....

Falsifiable prediction: Somehow the schedule will slip.

Meh. They've already reconfigured "Adobe Animate CC," formerly known as Adobe Flash CC, to export to HTML5, so devs who know ActionScript won't skip a beat.

Somebody important "enough" will say they need it.

We'll see.

FWIW, I went flash free earlier this year to the point of digging out traces left behind by the uninstall.

Have not been inconvenienced by the lack of it since.

For those who still dig it, no doubt the standalone installers will be archived by enthusiasts if not Adobe.

I was flash-free about five years ago. I missed stuff others could see but I just wasn't willing to have it on my computator.

The Adobe Flash Farewell Tour 2020: LibreOffice to axe export support for .SWF in version 7
The Register
LibreOffice has joined the rest of the industry to hammer another nail in the coffin of Adobe's Flash technology with the removal of an export filter from the suite.

Noted by Phoronix, the death knell of the tech that, frankly, most had forgotten was even there in the first place was noted not with fireworks but with a terse commit stating that with Adobe retiring the tech by the end of 2020, there was little point in keeping the functionality to export to .SWF in the project anymore.

The release notes also highlighted the deprecation: "Macromedia Flash export filter was removed."

...
More rooting out the last traces.

One last Abode Flash story. Or will there be more?

Microsoft: We're getting rid of Flash by the end of the year - except you can still use it
The Register
...

Disabling Flash Player by default won't necessarily kill off Flash apps. Some companies, horrible though it may seem, still use Flash apps for intranet content, dashboards, training apps, and other software no one could be bothered to rewrite.

So Adobe has enlisted Samsung's Harman group to provide Flash support to enterprise customers after the end of the year. And Microsoft plans to make Flash Player loadable through its browser plug-in interface.

"To aid such customers, Microsoft Edge will allow Adobe Flash Player to load as a plug-in via the Internet Explorer mode feature," explained Gopinath. "Inherently, Internet Explorer 11 will also allow this."

Microsoft, however, will not be providing support for those running Flash as a plug-in, so don't ask.

In December 2020, Microsoft will no longer distribute "Security Updates for Adobe Flash Player" for Edge Legacy and Internet Explorer 11. In January 2021, Flash Player will be disabled by default and all versions older than KB4561600 (released in June 2020) will be blocked.
