If you replace the box, couldn't you just stick the hard drive with your files on it into the new machine as a secondary drive and copy the stuff off that way?
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

K. I have sobered up enough to discuss this (not really, I dont drink, that was humor)
Here was the error, actually the first
I01 Initialization failed
Now, I a really out of my depth here. I figure, when faed with this, that I am not alone and go go duck is my friend.
Anyway, I was led to this as a fix .. hell losyt it but it is from the CMD and it was a series of fixbootrec /something, three fixes. Well, one didnt work ... this one ... EFI partition. seems the little fucker was missing. soooo ...

hang on ... this was the wording for the fix bootrec /fixboot three off those.

anyway .. found a long list of commands to insert a efi partition. Said fuck it.

I was getting close to the limits of endurance. You must understand that I have guns and ammo and tannerite and inanimate things thwart me at their peril

I made a bootable memory stick. Changed the boot sequence to only recognize the usb port. Went thru it multiple time. See, I did not have the patience to waiit for it to end so I didn't see what it sait after it "loaded" win 10 again. See hwat I mean? So I thought the fucker wasn't working. It was not 10pm and I was up at 430.

There are 2 options to load windows 1 keeps your files one wipes them.

I alternated between the two ... repeatedly.

What I didn't see was the message "windows sucessfully loaded ... restarting"
I forgot that the only thing the stupid thing could boot from was the usb. So lather, rinse, repeat.
Groundhog Day
In so doing I reloaded with both options thus wiping my files.

<sigh>

There was one document that I spent a couple of hours on, couple of odds and ends. Wanted to wipe the thing anyway before returning it. But now I wonder, is the crisis over? Should I return the thing and get another or persevere.

It's pretty clear the next one will have the same issue.

OK my underemployed friends whose free time is exceeded only by their girth.

A report.

Tho' my startup thingie was made on a Win 10 Home machine, it seems that the "new" (I use the term with immense sarcasm) machine downloaded and installed Win 10 pro. Probably 5 or 6 times.

I am on it now, can you tell?

First thing, this time, I created backups using Syncback immediately rather than assuming "what could go wrong with a "new" machine the first day?"

My gut tells me that the fault in the boot whoosie had nothing to do with the machine, per se (except that it was an innocent bystander, so to speak). That being the case I am moving ahead with the machine in question.

Pain in the ass but not as bad a flying Lion Air.

More to follow, or not.

And !!!!! .......

I found windows.old wherein were a multitude of files I had thought lost.

Huzza.

It's like they were lost in the Bermuda Triangle and were just relaesed like at the end of a Speilberg movie.

What is it called? The Stockholm Syndrome?
feelings of trust or affection felt in many cases of kidnapping or hostage-taking by a victim toward a captor.
Sums it up.

As I've pointed out, you elites had more than the naughts. We had zeros. And sometimes not even that.

It was tough back then, I tell ya. We had to use water power to drive pebbles into a binary choice trough. Problem is without ones there usually wasn't much choice. Our machines were popular with socialist regimes though.
