I've been to an exhibition where there were incredibly hot drawings of yet (mostly) clothed ladies. Couldn't find them on the Web. :|

Botticelli 'imitation' is found to be the real thing

It was thought to be an imitation of a masterpiece but sometimes it just takes a bit of cleaning and science to find a treasure.

Image

A painting dismissed as an imitation of Sandro Botticelli's Madonna Of The Pomegranate has actually turned out to be the real thing.

The more famous and much larger version is displayed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

For years it was thought that the smaller version, painted in 1487, was a copy by an unknown artist.
[…]
"I noticed instantly that the painting bore a striking resemblance to the workshop of Botticelli himself.

"Stylistically it was too similar to be an imitation, it was of the right period, it was technically correct and it was painted on poplar, a material commonly used at the time.

"After removing the yellowing varnish, x-ray and infrared examination revealed under-drawing, including changes to the final composition uncommon in straight imitations."
[…]
It was bought by diamond magnate Julius Wernher in 1897 and is now part of the Wernher Collection, which includes more than 700 works of art.

Artist auctions off virus-ridden laptop for $1 million

A laptop infected with some of the most destructive pieces of malware ever may sound like the kind of ticking time bomb you'd expect only in sci-fi movies. But one man has created just such a machine, and it can be yours — if you have about $1 million to spare.

No, this isn't some shady dark web marketplace. It's an art auction, and the current bidding price is around $1.2 million.

The piece, by artist Guo O Dong, is titled "The Persistence of Chaos," and the name is apt because the laptop could wreak some serious havoc. The old Samsung Netbook that runs Windows XP is infected with half a dozen extremely dangerous pieces of malware that, cumulatively, have caused nearly $95 billion in damages, according to Dong.

Happy Muricans:
Lack of space at the British Museum sees major loan of Assyrian collection to Getty

Since the closure of a basement gallery in 2006 there is little room to store the whole collection

Image

The British Museum is to lend an "important group" of Assyrian sculpted reliefs to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles for three years because it lacks the funds to create an adequate display space for all of its outstanding collection. The loan will include the Banquet Scene, which is widely regarded as the world’s finest single relief panel from Assyria.

The Los Angeles show, Assyria: Palace Art of Ancient Iraq (from 2 October), will comprise 12 large gypsum panels like those destroyed by Islamic State extremists in Iraq in 2015. The sculptures on loan date from the ninth to seventh centuries BC and were excavated at Nimrud, Nineveh and Khorsabad in the mid-19th century.
