↑ Aha! The sugary Moravian Freemason! (Thanks Wikipedia… ) But even for an "illustrator", once his work is on an umbrella, it becomes:

And he alas also produced this kind of painting:

So I really prefer the earlier and rougher ribaldry of Toulouse-Lautrec, e. g.:

As most old Oriental carpets have of course disappeared, their representation on paintings interests historians of the subject a lot, e. g. by the Flemish Masters:

(unknown master)

Now the oldest surviving carpet (ca. 2400 years old) comes presumably from the Pazyryk burials:

Wikipedia wrote:Pazyryk carpet

One of the most famous finds at Pazyryk is the Pazyryk carpet, which is probably the oldest surviving carpet in the world. It measures 183×200 cm and has a knot density of approximately 360 000 knots per square meter, which is a higher knot density than most modern carpets. The middle of the carpet consists of a ribbon motif, while in the border there is a procession with deers and in another border warriors on horses. The Pazyryk carpet was probably manufactured in East Turkistan around 400 B.C. When it was found it had been deeply frozen in a block of ice, which is why it is so well-preserved. The carpet can be seen at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

I have an interest in obscure things. On reflection, it is probably becasue if no one else knows anything about the subject, it is easy to be an "expert" and diminsish those about you. Sort of in the land of blind men a one eyed man is king thing.

Anyway, a few years ago I came across this at a flea market in CT
Image
I thought that the peace had merit and looked into the artist. One Charles Howard Johnson

A sad sad story. Guy had talent, moved to NY, got married, had a daughter, illustrated for Life and Look and a bunch of rags of the time. There were even a few writeups which characterized him as a leader of the art movement in NY. He had shows.
Fucker, just when he had the world by the balls, dropped dead at age 28 in 1896.
Obit is here
http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-fr ... ref=slogin

It was really sad. Guy had talent and everything going for him, was a "celebrity" of the time. Now I bet no one here even heard of him.
Anyhoo, felt bad and did his bio on wiki

I put some "art news" here:
BBC wrote:Poland buys da Vinci and famous collection for bargain price

The Polish government has purchased a world-famous art collection, including one of Leonardo da Vinci's most famous paintings, for a fraction of its value.

The Czartoryski collection of about 86,000 pieces, based in the city of Krakow, includes da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine and works by Rembrandt.

It was sold for €100m ($105m; £85m) despite being estimated at about €2bn.

The management board of the Czartoryski Foundation resigned in protest at the bargain price.

The board says it was not consulted about the sale, which was negotiated between Poland's culture Ministry and the head of the family which owns the collection, Adam Karol Czartoryski.

Mr Czartoryski said he was supporting the Polish nation by accepting the offer, effectively making a large donation to the state.

He said he "felt like making a donation" and that it was his choice to make.

In addition to the artworks, the Czartoryski collection includes about 250,000 manuscripts and books. All are now the property of the Polish state.
Image
Lady with an Ermine, painted in 1490, is one of only four portraits of women by Da Vinci.

It shows Cecilia Gallerani, a young woman in the Milanese court who was mistress to Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan.

His nickname at court was "the white ermine" - explaining the animal's presence in her arms.

It was stolen from Poland by Nazi forces during World War Two, but later repatriated and restored to its owners.

In 2014, new techniques revealed that the painting had been changed at least twice - with the eponymous animal only being added in a later version.

I'm not sure if it really counts as "art" but I spent a few weeks rising at ungodgly hours to snap this pic of dawn rising through the Reddish Vale Viaduct.

And if you don't like it, I don't give a fuck. Although I might travel to Finland and throttle pillory to cheer everyone up for the New Year.
