All this variously NSFW.

The artsy Parisian Eroticism Museum is closing and sells its collections. (Of course never got a grant from the State or the city.)

I put some "art news" here:
BBC wrote:Poland buys da Vinci and famous collection for bargain price

The Polish government has purchased a world-famous art collection, including one of Leonardo da Vinci's most famous paintings, for a fraction of its value.

The Czartoryski collection of about 86,000 pieces, based in the city of Krakow, includes da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine and works by Rembrandt.

It was sold for €100m ($105m; £85m) despite being estimated at about €2bn.

The management board of the Czartoryski Foundation resigned in protest at the bargain price.

The board says it was not consulted about the sale, which was negotiated between Poland's culture Ministry and the head of the family which owns the collection, Adam Karol Czartoryski.

Mr Czartoryski said he was supporting the Polish nation by accepting the offer, effectively making a large donation to the state.

He said he "felt like making a donation" and that it was his choice to make.

In addition to the artworks, the Czartoryski collection includes about 250,000 manuscripts and books. All are now the property of the Polish state.
Image
Lady with an Ermine, painted in 1490, is one of only four portraits of women by Da Vinci.

It shows Cecilia Gallerani, a young woman in the Milanese court who was mistress to Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan.

His nickname at court was "the white ermine" - explaining the animal's presence in her arms.

It was stolen from Poland by Nazi forces during World War Two, but later repatriated and restored to its owners.

In 2014, new techniques revealed that the painting had been changed at least twice - with the eponymous animal only being added in a later version.

I'm not sure if it really counts as "art" but I spent a few weeks rising at ungodgly hours to snap this pic of dawn rising through the Reddish Vale Viaduct.

And if you don't like it, I don't give a fuck. Although I might travel to Finland and throttle pillory to cheer everyone up for the New Year.

Some news:
Smithsonian wrote:375,000 Images From the Met Are Now Yours for the Taking

There’s nothing like a trip to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art—its stately interiors, its ornate floors, its walls and exhibit space filled with some of history’s most exhilarating works of art. But for years, accessing the Met’s collections without taking a physical trip to 5th Avenue has been a challenge. Not anymore: As The New York Times' Joshua Barone reports, the museum just made 375,000 images available online for anyone to use.

It’s a milestone for the museum, which is one of the world’s most visited. Though many of the Met's works are in the public domain, it’s taken years for the museum to revise its open access policy and make those images accessible to users for free. As Barone reports, hundreds of thousands of artworks are now digitized, licensed under the Creative Commons Zero, and ready to download.

Creative Commons Zero, or CC0, is the least restrictive type of copyright license. It allows the holders of content to completely waive their copyright and related rights. Though the works now being released by the Met are currently in the public domain, images of them haven’t been readily available. Nor has the database information that accompanies them. By adopting CC0, the museum has now made that information available to all—and as the museum clarifies in its image policy online, it’s now making database information about images not currently in the public domain available using CC0 as well.

To get to the Public Domain stuff: http://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection and check "Public Domain Artworks".

Regarding the pic, is that to simulate wide hips meaning (I think) easy child birth or did they use women as table centerpieces?

It's a pannier dress (from French panier = basket). Wikipedia sayeth it was a matter of displaying stuff.
Here's another example from 1778:

Rich people showing off expensive & flashy trinkets is nothing new, and deeming such frivolity important isn't either (e. g read about a noble lady, whose name I forgot, who kept hair in her pockets so she could improve her hairdo on the spot…). The resulting fashions need no real rational basis. The poulaine shoes are an amusing example:

Just not appreciated in his own time eh? Like Van Gogh? Yeah, I kinda doubt that's it. His paintings look like those of an unremarkable schoolboy to me, but maybe nobody has recognized the hidden genius yet.

10 Artists Not Appreciated in Their Time
Vincent Van Gogh: Today, we consider Vincent Van Gogh to be one of the greatest and most influential painters of all time, but that wasn’t the case when he was alive. Van Gogh’s work received little to no recognition during his lifetime. His paintings were often described as being too dark and lacking the bright liveliness seen in Impressionist paintings of the time. Van Gogh produced more than 900 paintings during his lifetime, but only sold one painting, Red Vineyard at Arles. After Van Gogh committed suicide, his brother’s wife collected his artwork and letters to make sure his work was recognized.

Anything is better than Jackson Pollock's multicolor diarrhea on a canvas.

And so what if Shrub's paintings aren't great art? Nobody expects them to be. And it keeps him out of trouble. Without his art, he'd probably be robbing banks or dealing drugs.

And much as I hated his presidency, I'd rather have him back than Donald Dump.

The last posts here made me laugh.

I'll contribute an anecdote (perhaps I already wrote about that, but there should be prescription by now) – from memory so I hope I don't mix things up. Ambroise Vollard, famous art merchant, once found two irate cabbies in front of his shop window. And what was heating them up? Some impressionist paintings, which they found "weren't art".

And about Van Gogh (pronounced like the Spanish jota), when you've spent some time on the hundreds of Impressionists at the Orsay Museum in Paris, I assure you you're very happy to finally get to his crazy paintings!

Agreed, mostly (been there a very long time ago). What put me off were the innumerable "predecessors" the museum showed with VG's early works. Tons of uninteresting, dull, muddy, dark, gloomy landscapes by unknowns. Yet makes you understand why he fled to the Mediterranean light.
Still worse were all the people using the provided loud headphones – made me wish I didn't understand the languages.
(Something very rough also happened in the waiting queue outside – pickpocket caught at work, I think.)

Nowadays I've seen (in Dijon) people connect with their tablets to various "information spots". Thankfully no noisy comments, but they just sit in a corner staring at the screen and then go away without really looking at the originals. Weird!
