Bohemian Rhapsody

Post by Nyarlathotep » Mon Nov 12, 2018 1:59 am

So just got back from Bohemian Rhapsody. Musician Biopics aren't my usual genre, but I was willing to make an exception for Queen. Even I am not so music averse so as not to like Queen (and I hate most music). You just can't hear "We will we will ROCK YOU!" and not feel like kicking 17 different kinds of butt.

I have heard some criticisms of it though, that make me wonder if these critics saw the movie at all or saw the same movie

1) I have heard that the movie downplayed that Freddy Mercury was Bi. I thought the movie made it really clear. It had him in love with this woman named Mary for his entire life yet ultimately ending up with a man. I'm no expert, but that seems pretty bi to me

2) I also heard that it never goes into his battle against Aids. This is true but it ends with Queen's performance at Live Aid in 1985. In the real world, he wasn't even diagnosed by then. But the movie has him getting diagnosed not long before. So it never goes into it until late in the movie, but he didn't get the diagnosis until late in his life.

Now, neither of those things was what the movie was ABOUT. It was about his rise as a musician and Queen's rise as a band, and I thought it did that rather well. But neither were they ignored, as I have heard claimed. Good movie overall. My biggest gripe is that the rest of Queen seemed to be rather bland next to Freddy. That may have been by design, but I thought it was a shame.

That's interesting because I enjoyed the portrayal of the rest of the band. Offering no challenge to Freddy's musical talents, I'll say that they struck me as people I'd probably enjoy working with more than Freddy.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

I dunno. Maybe its that Freddy had such a huge personality, but this is how they came across to me in the movie, in visual form

Freddy Mercury The rest of the band

If the movie was at all accurate about his personality, I suspect he wouldn't have had it any other way
