The Bechdel test for movies

Post by Abdul Alhazred »

It's been around a while.
... a measure of the representation of women in fiction. It asks whether a work features at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man. The requirement that the two women must be named is sometimes added.

I thought of it recently while streaming Ice Station Zebra (1968), an old favorite of mine.

A Cold War thriller. All star cast. Face to face confrontation with the Soviets on the polar ice cap. :coolspecs:

Rock Hudson as the captain of a nuclear submarine. Patrick McGoohan as the British spy (natch). James Brown. Ernest Borgnine.

No women at all. None. :)

Stupid. It simply is a test for a film being a chick flic.

I can tell easily. Is there any point in the movie where while the "plot" is advanced, a character's movements are accompanied by the playing of a pop tune? If dancing is involded then +1. If a dopey grin is involved +1. If the best friend is a dumpy chick with glasses +1

No. In a chick flick the women talk about men and fail the Bechdel test.

Big clue.

I bet she gets mistaken for a man a lot.

Maybe she takes dates to chick flicks, but that doesn't mean she's watching the movie. 8)

Not to the degree that you'd ever mistake one for the other, but it occurs to me she looks a lot like Woody Allen at that age.
