Why I won't try Netflix

Post by DrMatt » Fri Mar 03, 2006 2:25 pm

Pop-ups and spyware. That about says it. They're welcome to advertise in the usual ways, but by even attempting to invade my machine, Netflix has earned a place in the Hall of Shame.

I haven't seen examples of Netflix and spyware, but the popups do sometimes make me question if supporting the company is a good idea.

Since I usually kill the popups one way or another, I actually signed up without realizing they advertised that way. It's kind of sad that they do that, and if there were another option that worked as well (I've heard Blockbuster has problems and whatever the heck Walmart is doing I prefer not to do business with them). I love the service so far, it's just a pity that they do the pop-under thing. Dunno anything about spyware from them, but that would be seriously worrying.

Since Dr. Matt is no longer able to object to Netflix for stupid reasons, I guess it's up to me.

Netflix responds to claims that they changed the artwork of shows based on viewers’ race
https://www.nme.com/news/tv/netflix-acc ... rk-2392085

The nut of it is that black users of Netflix see movie posters that show black actors in what are predominantly white-acted movies, thereby tricking them into watch white movies. And they give a good degree of anecdotal evidence to support it.

Netfix responds:
“We don’t ask members for race, gender or ethnicity so cannot use this information to personalise their individual experience,” a spokesperson for the company told Newsbeat.

“The only information we use is a member’s viewing history. Reports that we look at demographics when personalising artwork are untrue”
I would argue that a customer's viewing history is a form of demographic meta data. If the last 5 movies I watched were Roxanne Roxanne, Mudbound, Beasts of No Nation, The Incredible Jessica James and First Match, then the odds are fairly good I'm either black or at the very least Rachel Dolezal.

OTOH, there was likely no human involved in this racially biased form of advertising. Their AI algorithm for selecting the cover art was probably utterly responsible. And we know that AI is, at it's core, racist.

Or perhaps they team with Newport.

Of the streaming services I've seen Netflix seems to have the easiest to use interface. Ultimately it's really a matter of which one has the content that you want to see though.

FX Boss John Landgraf Tears Apart Netflix’s Own Viewership Data: Not ‘Remotely Accurate’

FX CEO John Landgraf used his TCA appearance to take down Netflix’s release of selective — and, in his opinion, misleading — ratings information, as well as the reporters who swallow the streaming service’s program-performance numbers.

“The source of those numbers: Netflix,” Landgraf scoffed, saying they look “really big” and present Netflix programs as “gigantic hits.”

Most egregious, Landgraf pointed to Netflix’s assertion that the launch of You was seen in 40M households.
https://www.thewrap.com/john-landgraf-n ... curate-fx/

For reference, 40M households represents about a third of Netflix subscribers.

He goes on to demonstrate why that can't be so. He says that Netflix is not tallying data the way it has always been done by the likes of Neilson, etc. They should be taking the sum of the minutes watched divided by the total length of the show.

Instead, Netflix counts a show as 'watched' if you stream it for any length of time, one minute or whatever. I think that's how Youtube does it too but I'm not sure.

So Fucking What! you're probably saying. I donno.

I started watching You this weekend. It's not bad actually. I'm about 4 episodes in and it seems to be keeping my interest.

I heard that they count it as viewed if you watched 70% of one episode or more. So typical more than just a couple of minutes, but not necessarily the whole thing. I still haven't gotten around to watching Bird Box.

Well, now that I heard about from this article, I'll probably try it too! Irony rocks!

p.s. Skip Bird Box. You'll stab yourself in the eyeballs from boredom before it's over. It just ain't worth it.

Am I understanding this correctly?

That you blasphemers have embraced the Evil One and are doing business with Netflix?

I don't get Netflix haters but they are sure out there. Look at the comments for any Netflix related articles out there and you'll see a majority of folks dissing them in some way or the other.

But weirdly ...
Google wrote:In 2018, there were about 127.59 million households in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a household consists of all the people who occupy a housing unit.
Google also wrote: In the third quarter of 2018, Netflix had over 137 million streaming subscribers worldwide. Of these subscribers, 58.46 million were from the United States.[/glow]
Not quite a majority but getting there. And if you count shared accounts, it surely is.
