Great news from India that concerns all of us!

Post by Abdul Alhazred »

it's CNN so caution advised, but I don't see any obvious partisan slant.

Indian schoolgirls discover asteroid moving toward Earth (CNN)
New Delhi(CNN)Two Indian schoolgirls have discovered an asteroid which is slowly shifting its orbit and moving toward Earth.

Radhika Lakhani and Vaidehi Vekariya, both studying in 10th grade, were working on a school project when they discovered the asteroid, which they named HLV2514.

The girls, from the city of Surat in the western Indian state of Gujarat, were participating in a Space India and NASA project, which allows students to analyze images taken by a telescope positioned at the University of Hawaii.

Asshole.
Dwivedi explained that the asteroid is currently close to the orbit of Mars -- but in 1 million years, it will change its orbit and move closer to Earth, although it will still be at a distance of more than 10 times the distance which exists between the Earth and the Moon.

I wonder if an actual meteor was headed our way in 10 years or 20, would we be able to do anything about it?

If it were in the next three months, we could be happy that for sure Trump will not have a second term. :)

We might, given plenty of notice. NASA has been working on this for a while. At present we don't have anything capable of doing the job.

Can't blow 'em up with nukes, then you just have lots of smaller pieces causing mayhem. One must land a rocket with a shit load of fuel on the thing and try to drive it off it's deadly course.

But if it's too massive, we're fucked.
You can lead them to knowledge, but you can't make them think.

In theory it's possible to use nukes as a kind of rocket engine. Getting them there is the problem. We simply don't have any space vehicles capable of doing it.

What is the smallest possible meteor that can be detected 10 or 20 years out? Go from there.

I'd worry about Yellowstone blowing instead if I were you. That's extremely unlikely to happen during our lifetimes but probably more likely than a dinosaur killer asteroid.

Yes, There's an Asteroid Coming for Earth Right Before Election Day

Image

Alas, as you've no doubt guessed, this is just clickbait. It won't actually hit the earth and it's actually much smaller than the one in the illustration. About the size of a small car or a refrigerator.

The theoretical argument that blowing an asteroid or comet into little pieces wouldn’t help is bullshit

It's a great idea, robinson. Instead of a dinosaur killer strike, we'd have a shit-load of highly radioactive space rocks smashing into the planet.

With any luck, they'd hit France. :)

As always, the Robinsuck noise from The Cornfield is misinformed. So you've blown it into little pieces. Now what? Most of them hit Earth in spite of our best efforts.

Sorry about your bad luck, Earth.
You can lead them to knowledge, but you can't make them think.

Since the 2013 meteor explosion Russian scientist have actually been doing experiments, on fragments of the meteorite, and currently existing bombs could easily vaporize a large meteor, with no drilling required.

A city sized rock, no way. They haven’t released data on a metallic meteor, but a 650 foot wide rocky object could be vaporized, stopping it from doing any damage at all.

Theoretically of course. The radioactive dust is another story, but much of it wouldn’t hit after a 3 megaton bomb blast.

The more you know ...

The Dino killer size shit, they are working on spacecraft to change the orbit. Which turns out to be not that hard. I’m sure Elon Musk could do it for a lot less than the government calculations lol
