Hopper Painting Sells for Record $91.9 Million at Christie’s

He is America’s most celebrated painter of the solitary realities of 20th century life. But Tuesday night at Christie’s, Edward Hopper joined the unreality of today’s art market when his 1929 painting “Chop Suey” sold for $91.9 million, with fees, an auction high for the artist.

The previous high for Hopper had been $40.5 million back in 2013 (roughly $43.8 million with inflation).

“Chop Suey” was the most expensive of 91 works Christie’s offered from the estate of Barney A. Ebsworth, the Seattle-based travel entrepreneur and renowned collector of American art, who died in April. Reportedly long-promised to the Seattle Art Museum, this much-exhibited painting of two young women seated in a sunlit Chinese restaurant had been estimated to go for $70 million to $100 million.

Botticelli 'imitation' is found to be the real thing

It was thought to be an imitation of a masterpiece but sometimes it just takes a bit of cleaning and science to find a treasure.

A painting dismissed as an imitation of Sandro Botticelli's Madonna Of The Pomegranate has actually turned out to be the real thing.

The more famous and much larger version is displayed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

For years it was thought that the smaller version, painted in 1487, was a copy by an unknown artist.

"I noticed instantly that the painting bore a striking resemblance to the workshop of Botticelli himself.

"Stylistically it was too similar to be an imitation, it was of the right period, it was technically correct and it was painted on poplar, a material commonly used at the time.

"After removing the yellowing varnish, x-ray and infrared examination revealed under-drawing, including changes to the final composition uncommon in straight imitations."
