France deports Bosnians who shaved daughter's hair over love affair

The ministry said five members of the girl’s family in the eastern city of Besancon had been deported to Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on Saturday morning.

“This expulsion from the national territory is the consequence of unacceptable behaviour on the part of the family in August, notably beatings and the shaving of an adolescent girl who was in love with a young Serbian man of another religion,” the ministry said.

It added that the girl, a minor, will be taken care of by social services and will obtain the right of residence in France when she reaches majority.

French media reported in August that a 17-year old Bosnian Muslim woman in Besancon had been beaten by her family and her hair had been forcefully shaved off because she wanted to marry a 20-year old Serbian Christian.

Bosnian and Serb forces fought a war in the 1990s that resulted in thousands of civilian deaths.

Brahim Aouissaoui, who killed three people, reportedly arrived in France in early October

The man who killed three people in a knife attack in a church in Nice on France’s Côte D’Azur on Thursday has been named as Brahim Aouissaoui, a 21-year-old Tunisian migrant.

Aouissaoui arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa in late September, when authorities placed him in coronavirus quarantine before releasing him with an order to leave Italian territory. He arrived in France in early October, sources close to the investigation told the AFP news agency.

French authorities say Aouissaoui had no identity papers on him when police shot and wounded him after the attack, but was carrying a document giving his name from the Italian Red Cross. He had not made any demand for political asylum in France.

Prosecutors in Sicily have confirmed to the Guardian that Aouissaoui arrived in Lampedusa on 20 September, then spent 14 days on a quarantine boat before being transferred to Bari on the mainland on 9 October.

The high number of arrivals from Tunisia means repatriation procedures from Italy are often delayed. Instead, Tunisians are frequently given an “exit slip”, requiring them to leave Italy within seven days. Aouissaoui had received such an order but, like many, travelled illegally to France.

Lyon shooting: Suspect admits attacking priest 'over affair'

A suspect has admitted to the shooting of a Greek Orthodox priest in the French city of Lyon last week over a personal dispute, prosecutors have said.

The 40-year-old suspect told prosecutors the priest was having an affair with his wife.

The priest, Nikolaos Kakavelakis, 52, was shot twice with a sawn-off shotgun outside his church on 31 October.

He spoke to police after coming out of a coma on Wednesday.

Journalists, human rights groups protest new French security bill banning images of police

French lawmakers on Tuesday began debating a bill that could ban dissemination of images of police officers' faces, triggering protests in Paris and other French cities against the potential loss of a check against abuses of power.

France's Macron issues 'republican values' ultimatum to Muslim leaders

French President Emmanuel Macron has asked Muslim leaders to accept a "charter of republican values" as part of a broad clampdown on radical Islam.

On Wednesday he gave the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) a 15-day ultimatum to accept the charter.

The CFCM has agreed to create a National Council of Imams, which will reportedly issue imams with official accreditation which could be withdrawn.

It follows three suspected Islamist attacks in little more than a month.

The charter will state that Islam is a religion and not a political movement, while also prohibiting "foreign interference" in Muslim groups.

Mr Macron has strongly defended French secularism in the wake of the attacks, which included the beheading of a teacher who showed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad during a class discussion last month.

Late on Wednesday, the president and his interior minister, Gérald Darmanin, met eight CFCM leaders at the Élysée palace.

"Two principles will be inscribed in black and white [in the charter]: the rejection of political Islam and any foreign interference," one source told the Le Parisien newspaper after the meeting.

The formation of the National Council of Imams was also agreed upon.

President Macron has also announced new measures to tackle what he called "Islamist separatism" in France.

The measures include a wide-ranging bill that seeks to prevent radicalisation. It was unveiled on Wednesday, and includes measures such as:

• Restrictions on home-schooling and harsher punishments for those who intimidate public officials on religious grounds
• Giving children an identification number under the law that would be used to ensure they are attending school. Parents who break the law could face up to six months in jail as well as large fines
• A ban on sharing the personal information of a person in a way that allows them to be located by people who want to harm them

"We must save our children from the clutches of the Islamists," Mr Darmanin told the Le Figaro newspaper on Wednesday. The draft law will be discussed by the French cabinet on 9 December.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the former French president, will make history on Monday when he appears in court accused of corruption and influence peddling.

The case is the first of several investigations against the rightwing politician who led France between 2007 and 2012 to come before judges after years of attempts to have the charges dropped or nullified.

Samuel Paty: Four students charged over teacher's beheading

Three of the suspects, who are between 13 and 14 years old, face charges of "complicity in a terrorist murder."

Four students have been charged over the killing of a Paris teacher last month, French media reported on Thursday.

In October, an Islamist terrorist murdered Samuel Paty and removed his head after the teacher showed his students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad taken from the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine.

Three of the suspects were reportedly accused of "complicity in a terrorist murder" by allegedly pointing Paty out to the killer. The three students are aged between 13 and 14 years old, French news agency AFP reported.

The fourth suspect is the daughter of the man who led an online campaign against the teacher, AFP reported. She has reportedly been charged with "slanderous denunciation" of Paty for relating her story of the civics lesson despite not attending the class.

The new suspects come in addition to the two other pupils who were charged earlier this month. Those two schoolchildren, aged 14 and 15, were indicted for "complicity in terrorist assassination" and placed under judicial supervision.

Justice authorities are now investigating 14 suspects in connection the crime, which is being treated as an act of Islamist extremism.

Video Emerges Of Brutal Beating Of Black Man

Four French police officers have been suspended and are in custody after a video that shows them brutally beating a Black man was posted online Thursday.

The incident has provoked an outcry across France and comes as President Emmanuel Macron's government is trying to push through controversial legislation that would restrict the filming of police. Civic and journalist freedom groups oppose the bill, calling it a shield for brutality.

Michel Zecler, a 41-year-old music producer, was not wearing a face mask — required under current COVID-19 measures — when police officers saw him walking in Paris last Saturday. As he tried to enter his music studio, the police officers pushed him through the doorway and pummeled him repeatedly with their fists and a billy club.

The beating stopped when others in the building came to Zecler's aid, though police later threw a tear-gas canister through the window to force him to leave his studio and arrested Zecler and others.

French Gov't Walks Back Proposal To Make Publishing Images Of Police Officers Illegal After Massive Protests Erupt Across The Nation

For reasons only known to legislators who apparently had their ears bent to the point of detachment by law enforcement, the French government -- at least briefly -- believed the nation would be better secured if citizens weren't allowed to film police officers and publish those recordings online.

A bill passed through the general assembly that would have made this act a crime.

One of its most controversial elements was Article 24, which sought to criminalise the publication of images of on-duty police officers with the intent of harming their “physical or psychological integrity”.

Under the article, offenders faced sentences of up to a year in jail and fines of 45,000 euros ($53,760) for sharing images of police officers.

This sounds like an effort to prevent doxxing but, given the breadth of the language in the proposed law, it could be read to forbid recording any officer who felt they might be harmed by their actions being documented. And it could be argued (with varying degrees of success) that any publication of images/recording depicting officers in any way they didn't explicitly approve of is "harmful."

And the proposal couldn't have come at a worse time. French law enforcement is facing additional scrutiny after a recording of officers beating a black man surfaced online.

Paris's top prosecutor has called for four police officers under investigation over the beating of a black music producer to face charges and for three of them to remain in detention as the probe continues.

Faced with consecutive protests (the one over the beating that rolled into the one over the proposed law), French legislators are backtracking.

Ayoub El-Khazzani: Gunman jailed for life over 2015 France train attack

A French court has sentenced an Islamist militant to life in jail over an August 2015 plot to attack Americans on a high-speed train.

Ayoub El-Khazzani, a Moroccan national, opened fire on board a train travelling from Amsterdam to Paris.

Two people were wounded in the incident before El-Khazzani was overpowered by passengers.

Three other men were found guilty of helping the 31-year-old plan the attack.

The events on board the train inspired a Clint Eastwood-directed film.

Dozens of people were called as witnesses following a four-year investigation into the attack.

El-Khazzani was found guilty of attempted murder as part of a terrorist enterprise over the attack, which happened three months before the deadly militant Islamist attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.

Three others were issued sentences of between seven and 27 years as accomplices.

The main defendant, who fought alongside Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria, had already admitted his role in the attack, near the town of Oignies in northern France. He told the trial last month he had been under orders from Paris attacks mastermind Abdelhamid Abaaoud to kill Americans and members of the European Commission.

In the end, he said he had been unable to carry out the plan. When Spencer Stone came at him "it was too much....I let him grab me", he told the court.

Earlier this month, one of three Americans hailed as heroes for overcoming El-Khazzani told the court his main aim had been to survive.

Spencer Stone, a 28-year-old ex-serviceman, described via video from the US how he and his friends had seen El-Khazzani pick up a Kalashnikov rifle and prepare to open fire.

Covid-19: French bill could ban unvaccinated from public transport

People who fail to get a Covid-19 vaccination could be banned from using public transport in France, according to a draft law sparking angry protests from opposition politicians on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Jean Castex on Monday got his cabinet's backing for a bill that is designed to provide a legal framework for dealing with health crises, including the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the text, which will now be submitted to parliament, a negative Covid test or proof of a "preventative treatment, including the administration of a vaccine" could be required for people to be granted "access to transport or to some locations, as well as certain activities".

According to opinion polls, 55 percent of French people say they will not get a Covid shot, one of the highest rates in the European Union.

The government's vaccination campaign is to start on Sunday.

President Emmanuel Macron has promised that coronavirus vaccinations, though strongly recommended, will not be mandatory.

But opposition politicians condemned the draft law, with Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right RN party, calling it an "essentially totalitarian" measure.

"In a backhanded way, this bill does not aim to make vaccinations mandatory, but will prevent anybody who doesn't comply from having a social life," she said.

RN party spokesman Sebastien Chenu said Macron's government was planning "a health dictatorship".

Guillaume Peltier, deputy leader of the centre-right LR party, said it was "inconceivable" that the government should be allowed to "get all the power to suspend our freedoms without parliamentary control."

Centrist senator Nathalie Goulet said the draft was "an attack on public freedoms", while the far-left deputy Alexis Corbiere said "we could at least have a collective discussion if the idea is to limit our public liberties."

In response, public sector minister Amelie de Montchalin said the bill was "not at all made to create exceptional powers for the government" or "create a health state."

She said there would be a debate about the bill during which "everything that needs clarification will be clarified."

ed, I generally use one of these. Unlike you Yanks, we Brits have a sense of decorum. Even when shooting snails. Witness will have to give advice if this is the generally accepted method of executing Escargots.
