https://www.businessinsider.com/what-a- ... ns-2020-11Biden promised a 'railroad revolution' that could see faster trains and a return to Amtrak's nostalgic past — here's what Americans might see
- President-elect Joe Biden is expected to be a friend to Amtrak following decades of loyal ridership during his time in the US Senate.
- A Biden presidency could finally see funding for new tunnels under the Hudson River, a project defunded by the Trump administration.
- An expansion of high-speed rail is also on the table as Biden seeks clean energy solutions for transportation.

Well, you have wars to wage, that distracts…
Are there lobbying groups for rail? More generally, for infrastructure?

A pit for graft. Period.
The reason is simple. The process of even getting to "start" is generational. That means that no one notices the payoffs and graft. It is just part of getting the job done. Since the likelihood of it ever finishing is zero, the whole mess will be consigned to the memory hole.

My appreciation of Abdul is this: When it comes to gay Jews, he's only second to Roy Cohn.

Since 1980, in-the-know computer gamers have been enthralled by the unpredictable, random, and incredibly deep gameplay of Rogue and those games inspired by it, known to fans as "roguelikes." For decades, this venerable genre was off the radar of most players and developers for a variety of reasons: deceptively simple graphics (often just text characters), high difficulty, and their demand that a player brings more of themselves to the game than your typical AAA title asks. This book covers many of the most prominent titles and explains in great detail what makes them interesting, the ways to get started playing them, the history of the genre, and more. It includes interviews, playthroughs, and hundreds of screenshots. It is a labor of love: if even a fraction of the author's enthusiasm for these games gets through these pages to you, then you will enjoy it a great deal.

Re: Abdul Alhazred Appreciation Thread
I'll put it here, in memoriam:
https://truthout.org/articles/aoc-eliza ... portation/AOC, Elizabeth Warren Introduce Bill to Electrify Public Transportation
A group of progressive congressional legislators has introduced a new proposal to invest $500 billion into infrastructure over the next 10 years in hopes of modernizing and electrifying the U.S.’s public transit systems while meeting ambitious climate targets.
The BUILD GREEN Infrastructure and Jobs Act was unveiled by Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) and Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts) and Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) and Andy Levin (D-Michigan) on Thursday. The legislators tout it as an essential facet of climate and Green New Deal legislation, and say it will help the U.S. reach the target of 100 percent clean energy nationwide.
“Electrifying our cars, buses and trains is a central pillar of the Green New Deal,” said Levin in a statement. “The answer to both the climate crisis and the crisis of wealth inequality is to empower working people with the sustainable investments necessary to rebuild the communities devastated by decades of pollution and corporate trade policy.”
...
A report by Data for Progress released alongside the report found that the bill would not only help tackle the climate crisis but would also provide real tangible benefits for Americans’ health. Electrifying the public bus and railroad fleet nationwide, which Data for Progress finds the bill would more than cover, would result in about 4,200 less deaths annually.
Electrifying buses and railroads would also reduce carbon dioxide emission by 21.5 million metric tons every year, equivalent to taking 4.5 million cars off the road, Data for Progress finds. This change would also avoid around $100 billion worth of health damages a year, according to the report, which is currently undergoing peer review.
https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/canadia ... -1.5356107Canadian Pacific Railway buys Kansas City Southern to create 1st Canada-to-Mexico rail network
Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd agreed on Sunday to acquire Kansas City Southern in a US$25-billion cash-and-stock deal to create the first railway spanning the United States, Mexico and Canada, standing to benefit from a pick-up in trade.
It would be the largest ever combination of North American railways by transaction value. It comes amid a recovery in supply chains that were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and follows the ratification of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) last year that removed the threat of trade tensions that had escalated under former U.S. president Donald Trump.
"Think about what we've gone through, think about the importance in North America of near-shoring that is occurring. This network uniquely provides a supply chain that allows our customers and our partners to actually benefit from that and leverage that opportunity," Canadian Pacific Chief Executive Keith Creel told Reuters in an interview.
The combination needs the approval of the U.S. Surface Transportation Board (STB). The companies expressed confidence this would happen by the middle of 2022, given that the deal would unite the smallest of the seven so-called Class I railways in the United States, which meet in Kansas City and have no overlap in their routes. The combined railway would still be smaller than the remaining five Class I railways.
The STB updated its merger regulations in 2001 to introduce a requirement that Class I railways have to show a deal is in the public interest. Yet it provided an exemption to Kansas City Southern given its small size, potentially limiting the scrutiny that its acquisition will be subjected to.
