Watching "Kingdom" on Netflix.
Thoroughly entertaining low budget "Zombies in 16th century Korea" romp.
Watchable for the awesome (yet underused) Doona Bae alone.

Re: What have you been watching lately
"Paradise" a BBC victorian costume drama. Pretty predictable but the damn brits can act and can actually produce something that holds one's attention.
Started the series about the Chess Chick (CC). Episode 1 not horrid. will continue.
"And then there were none" .... retelling of A. Christie story. 3 episodes. I found it muddled and unpleasant.
Brooklyn 9-9 -- massively silly 24 min. sitcom. Two pluses: 1- every episode makes me laugh at least once. 2- there are like dozens of seasons with thousands of episodes

Aunty Donna's Big Ol' House of Fun on Netflix.
Surprisingly funny. Episode 4: Broden goes to a trendy hipster barbershop to get a haircut was a pretty good sketch.

Re: What have you been watching lately
Remake of The Little Drummer Girl.
6 episodes, seems pretty good. Well acted. Worth looking into.
I recall watching the old Diane Keaton verson and convincing my son to sit in. 20 minutes into the thing he plaintively said "can I go now?". It really was horrid. Overacted etc etc. Diane was, if truth be told, not a terribly good actress. Or ... have our tastes changed that much?
The Fishermans Friend came highly reccomended. Have a copy, will watch. Water, boats, makes me think of Lister on the high seas.

My wife has begun her annual flood of holiday dramas and romantic comedies. It's all right, I spend most of my time PC gaming, and she yields the TV willingly when something important is on like The Mandalorian.

Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

Re: What have you been watching lately
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.
This was Chadwick Boseman's last role, and other than playing The Black Panther in the Marvel movies, it's the only other thing I've seen him in. It's a period piece set in 1927. I thought it was quite good. The title role was played by Viola Davis.
The real Ma Rainey was one of the pioneers of the blues. Arguably she invented it.
It's not a happy feel-good movie but I thought it was pretty well done overall.

Trailer:Chicago, 1927. A recording session. Tensions rise between Ma Rainey, her ambitious horn player and the white management determined to control the uncontrollable "Mother of the Blues". Based on Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's play.

I did not like the 1st episode of the new Watchmen, but it got progressively better. By the end of Season 2, I dare say it was better than the original storyline. Jeremy Irons was an awesome Ozymantius.

Re: What have you been watching lately
Saw a really good movie last night ... The Vanishing of Sidney Hall. It has been a long time since I have seen a movie as well acted with as good a story as this.
Gotta also say that aside from the lack of gayness, the main character reminds me of Capote. In terms of precocity if nothing else.
Give it a shot. It may seem slow but it is a fucking story fer chrissakes. Give it time.
Read this (I found the Early Stories on line)

Particularly Miss Belle Rankin
He was a teenager when he wrote that.I was eight the first time I saw Miss Belle Rankin. It was a hot
August day. The sun was waning in the scarlet-streaked sky,
and the heat was rising dry and vibrant from the earth.
I sat on the steps of the front porch, watching an
approaching negress, and wondered how she could ever carry
such a huge bundle of laundry on top of her head. She
stopped and in reply to my greeting, laughed, that dark,
drawling negro laughter. It was then that Miss Belle came
walking slowly down the opposite side of the street….
I saw her many times afterwards, but that first vision,
almost like a dream, will always remain the clearest—Miss
Belle, walking soundlessly down the street, little clouds of red
dust rising about her feet as she disappeared into the dusk
I was so young that I never thought that I would ever be old, that I could ever die.

Doom Patrol on HBOMax
It's a superhero show in that it deals with people who have superhuman abilities. But it isn't really as these are people whose superhuman abilities have basically fucked up their lives and they are trying to deal with it. It's a really weird show. IN one episode they were nearly eaten by a swarm of sentient butts. It's really good, if you have a taste for the bizarre.

I am not generally a fan of comedy sketches but this one is a bit different. The chick in this 1/2 hour "showcase' is Lauren Lapkus and the theme is a send up of reality shows and airhead, talentless bimbos. It is wincingly good. The character is so horrid you will have trouble watching.

L.A.s Finest, it is apparently a spin off of the Bad Boys movies, but only marginally. Apparently one of the characters is the sister of Will Smith's characters from the movies. The characters are actually pretty interesting, which the only reason I keep watching it. Because otherwise this should be called Generic Buddy Cop Movie: The TV Show

I am am currently watching Gemini Man.
It's best described as Fresh Prince Meets Burn Notice Meets The Phantom Menace. However, I must warn anyone that is tempted to watch it that my description sounds more awesome than it actually is. Though if you look at it as a really weird sequel to Fresh Prince of Bel Aire its actually a lot of fun.

Re: What have you been watching lately
Wandavision has been extraordinary. On one level it's an incredibly detailed homage to American TV history, where fans of prime time sitcoms from the 50s to the 2010s will find tons of details and references to note. As well, it's a fun and mysterious tale from the MCU that always keeps you guessing. And then on yet another level there's perving on Elizabeth Olsen. My favorite program on right now. Two more words: fake commercials.
