My wife ran across it and called me at work. So I registered and posted to it.

Interesting thread (and site) LukeT. Perhaps most poignant is the respect expressed for Randi over there; what a shame it's all ended up this way. Not that I'm criticising this site, thumbs up and thanks to Girl6. :D
Shit happens. The older you get, the more often shit happens. So you have to try not to give a shit even when you do. Because, if you give too many shits, you've created your own shit creek and there's no way out other than swimming through the shit. Oh, and fuck.

Have you changed your position on discussing the JREF on other forums? I see you have decided to post a long story of what, why and how the JREF came to split. I will go back and read it later, just wanted to take a pause and ask you the question.

edited to add: I am glad to see that my name didn't get mentioned in your story. I have to wonder if the details you shared about Hal's flirt with self-destruction were necessary, but too late. It's out there now.

Went to the site. Nice post, Luke. I appreciate your candor and accurate recounting of the events at JREF. It sucks that the community has been scattered to the winds. I feel like I made some cherished friends there and that I may no longer have any contact with many of them.

I don't know where I belong in cyberspace anymore, or if I belong at all.

Cheers,

Like I said, anyone is free to quote me, and I stand by what I said.

edited to add: And it will help satisfy Hal's martyr complex.

I register'd there--no, hold your applause--and will comment a bit on the situation at JREF.

Basically, it is a shame what happened, but it was something that was happening at least since I started at JREF.

I've been registered over there for a year or so. I don't go there often, because there never seemed to be enough activity there, compared to JREF.

The folks always seemed nice though. Maybe they will pick up a few JREF'ers from this.

I thought it was your complaint at TOOP that people should get over TOP and not post about it. Sorry, I was must have been mistaken. :D

I don't want people to get over TOP. I would like the protest movement to stay alive until Hal resigns once and for all.

My complaint at TOOP was that there were too many topics about TOP and they were dominating the front page. So far, this is the only one about TOP here.

What's to be gained by protesting until Hal resigns? Nothing, and the JREF would lose in the long run as well as the short run.

Damn few people have the whole story about what happened. I sure don't. True, I voiced my disagreements, but I don't think it's worth a "protest movement". The JREF did what it did, and here we are. I think it's about time to bury all hatchets and stop the skeptic vs. skeptic infighting.

Why keep using euphemisms for The JREF Forum? "The Other Place" is what we used to call Hell, back when we were kids in Sunday school. Anybody offended by the words "The JREF Forum" can go suck an egg. Or blow an egg, if they swing that way.

For me, TOP is just a convenient acronym.

Also, in the UK Parliament, "the Other Place" is what the House of Lords is always called in the House of Commons.

So I always thought that calling the JREF forum "the Other Place" is pretty amusing and ironic given recent events.

I agree. If you want to protest the former managements actions, just don't buy into their harebrained idea of having split forums. We have everything we need here, minus the overly-strict headmaster. Don't contribute your intellectual property to their organization.

I'm doing what I can to get my friends and favorite posters to move over here, I encourage others to do the same.

Let's see, I can discuss anything I want here among intelligent friends, or I can be part of Biosphere III. Hmm, let me think about it.

I was dubious until I knew G6 was running things. Now that the forums here are set up, I personally see no need to keep a foot on the dock and a foot on the boat.

I still support the JREF, IMO it's petty to ignore them and self-defeating to the cause of skepticism. I generally post to any topic anywhere that moves me to.

SkepticalCommunity.com is what you make of it. To me it's another voice in a rising chorus.

Why should I post on JREF? With every post I make, I have to worry about Hal sitting there with his Non-JREF-Worthy hammer in one hand and the server power cord in the other, and his lackey Bill Hoyt waiting with his finger poised over the REPORT button. I wouldn't be surprised if they turn on the function that requires a moderator to read and approve your post before it shows up on the forum before too long.

Screw that!

I honestly don't think it's going to be that draconian. If it is, then having perfectly fine posts be rejected will only make the admin/moderater look bad. I understand how you feel, though, you had to keep a lot bottled up for a long time being a moderator there. I am glad you snapped out of your military mind. :)

I had this weird idea... do you think Bill Hoyt could actually be Bill O'Reilly? :D
