The Hubble Space Telescope (HST), in its thirteen years of operation, has allowed us to observe properties of the universe humans have been able, until very recently, to probe only with their thoughts. This review presents a brief summary of a few of the highlights of HST discoveries, discusses their physical implications, and identifies unsolved problems. A broad range of topics is covered, from our own solar system to cosmology. The topics fall into the general categories of: planets (including both in the solar system and extrasolar), stellar evolution, black holes (including both of stellar-mass and supermassive), galaxy formation and evolution, the determination of cosmological parameters, and the nature of the recently discovered "dark energy.''

Plouffe is the guy who showed that one can compute the billionth digit of pi without knowing all the preceding ones (his formulae converge so fast that it's enough to compute a range of digits, the errors staying on the borders, if I remember well).

The monk Wangohan had been given a web application to develop on his own. For this task he had chosen a promising new framework, but because it was unfamiliar his initial implementation was awkward and fragile. For weeks Wangohan labored to correct the problems, restructuring his code as his understanding of the framework grew. By release time his application was elegant beyond compare, and the abbots of the Spider Clan agreed to allow the new tool in future projects.

“But first,” said the junior abbot, “we must implement the fundamental components that the Temple will need, and provide them to all who would consume this framework.”

To Wangohan’s great dismay, the monk Landhwa was chosen for this task. Worse yet, Landhwa had no interest in studying Wangohan’s code, nor in learning from Wangohan the many particulars of the framework. Instead Landhwa consulted Wangohan only when he could not be bothered to find the answer to some simple question on his own.

Finally Wangohan asked the junior abbot of the Spider Clan why Landhwa was chosen to lead the adoption of the framework.

“He is skilled with code, his workload was light, and he did not object to the opportunity,” said the junior abbot indifferently.

Wangohan bowed and went out.

The next day, master Suku summoned Wangohan to her chamber.

“The junior abbot has been taken ill with stomach cramps of a most unpleasant nature,” she said. “The cause is unknown, but I suspect bad cinnamon.”

“It is a common malady,” agreed Wangohan.

“I was going to suggest as much to the junior abbot, but learned that you had already taken him to the operating room,” said Suku. “I was unaware that the Temple had an operating room.”

“It serves primarily as the carpenter’s shed,” said Wangohan.

“And I presume that the surgeon serves primarily as the carpenter?”

“Yes,” said Wangohan. “But as I told the junior abbot: he is skilled with blades, his workload was light, and he did not object to the opportunity.”

Carla Hayden has an audacious plan to make Library of Congress available to you online

Ambitious doesn't begin to describe Carla Hayden's plan to make the Library of Congress' collection available to the world. Audacious may be closer to it.

Hayden, the 14th person to steward the Library, wants to "throw open the treasure chest" by digitizing its vast collection and making it accessible online. The five-year plan's understated name -- Enriching the Library Experience -- doesn't capture its scope. Hayden wants people to engage with everything from the letters of Abraham Lincoln to early-edition Batman comics.

Established in 1800, the Library of Congress is the oldest cultural institution in the country. It houses the largest collection of photographs, maps, comic books and Bibles in the world. The shelving alone runs 826 miles, and that stores just some of its 170 million items, including 68 million manuscripts, 6.5 million pieces of music and more than 3.4 million recordings.

Hayden is both the first woman and the first African American to oversee the institution. She's also one of just three Librarians of Congress to have a professional background in the field of library sciences. (Other people to hold the post have been scholars, historians, lawyers and authors.)

150K Nature Illustrations Spanning Hundreds of Years Are Now Free Online

Thanks to the Biodiversity Heritage Library, you can easily peruse rad nature drawings, Charles Darwin's personal library, and many other works in the public domain.

The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) has uploaded more than 150,000 images of biological sketches, some dating back to the 15th century, onto the internet. They’re all in the public domain, and free for anyone who wants them.

The images are pulled from journals, research material, and libraries, altogether more than 55 million pages of literature. BHL is “the world’s largest open access digital library for biodiversity literature and archives,” according to its website. On top of public domain content, BHL also works with rights holders to get permission to make copyrighted materials available under a Creative Commons license.

Online tool drops paywall for a week and people invited to share photos relating to their names

An online dictionary explaining the meanings and origins of more than 45,000 British and Irish surnames is being made accessible to all in the hope that it might help bring families separated by Covid-19 closer together.

For the next week, people will be able to tap into the Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland for free and find out where their surnames – and thus perhaps their ancestors – came from.

It has always surprised me how much everyone focuses on credentials while its knowledge that holds the true power. I have a great respect for MIT spending time to create such an amazing resource for society.
