Apple just had the most profitable quarter of any company ever

18 billion dollars in 3 months. That's not sales or gross revenue, that's net profit after subtracting costs. Almost 2 billion more than the next-most profitable quarter in history.

Let me guess . . . you agreed with passing rather than running the ball.

Heh. I very much doubt that I'll need to upgrade this machine before it finally turns its toes up and goes to the great PC scrapyard in the sky.

And yes, I do use all that power.

And yes, my antivirus is free.

And yes, I am still £1100 better off than I would have been had I bought the puny Mac pictured above.

Mad.

Mad with t3h power to transcode porn vids at lightening fast speeds.

Mad.

HAAAAhhhhhhHHHHHaaahhhhhhHhHHhhahhahahhhhHHHhhhhahahahhHHHHHHHaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.aahhhhhhhhhhhhhhahhahahhhhHHHHHaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.HAAAAhhhHHHHHHHHHhHHhhahhahahhhhHHHHHaaahhhhhhHhHHhhahhahahhhhHHHhhhhahahahhHHHHHHHaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.aahhhhhhhhhhhhhhahhahahhhhHHHHHaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Did I mention that my great-great-grandfather was Humphrey Myddelton, Hatter of Denbigh?

He was mad, too.

It runs in the family.

Cal Tech wins $1.1 billion patent infringement case against Apple, Broadcom

Apple and Broadcom must pay $1.1 billion in damages for infringing CalTech’s patents on Wi-Fi transmissions, a California jury ordered Wednesday.

Apple was ordered to pay $838 million, while Broadcom was ordered to pay $270 million, according to lawyers for CalTech.

Apple said it planned to appeal the verdict. Broadcom didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

CalTech filed the lawsuit in 2016, claiming Broadcom Wi-Fi chips in Apple products infringed its patents. The Apple products cited were the iPhones iPads, iPods, Watches, Apple TVs, Macs, iMacs, HomePods, Macbooks and Airport routers.

The patents relate to coding systems that correct errors in the transmission of data used in the 802.11 Wi-Fi standard.Apple and Broadcom denied infringing the patents and said the school wasn’t entitled to significant damages even if they were using the inventions.

The only issues before the jury were whether the Broadcom chips used the university’s patents and, if so, how much in damages was owed.

Even though I work in patents (translation thereof) I'm kinda jaded about the whole thing and about intellectual property law in general.

I'm also skeptical that a jury of laypeople can truly figure out whether one group of eggheads "stole" an idea from another group of eggheads or came up with it independently. Even if you do come up with an idea independently it's possible for it to fall under a patent claim, because those are written very broadly in many cases. (Seriously, it's the job of patent attorneys to right patent claims to be as broad as they can get away with.) The point of a patent isn't really to convey useful information (well, ostensibly it is, in theory, but in practice that's not what the people writing them really care about). The actual point of a patent is to legally protect one's "intellectual property" from being used without the permission of the person claiming the invention. In the end, it's "will this patent protect me from being sued, and will it allow me to sue others if they try to use this general idea."
