How to answer my five year old.

Post by Alg2376 »

Hello,

My five year old son recently asked me "who made us?". Once I finished taking him from Big Bang and expanding universe through to homo habilis and evolution through natural selection I realised I might have gone too deep. That we are made from dying stars and monkeys is all he got out of it. And then he said that another kid said "a man named God made us" and that seemed easier for him to process. Anyone dealt with this? Anyone have a positive experience explaining this to a five year old? Should I just wait? Can he still be a member of the Boy Scouts?(had no clue you had to have religion for that)

Thanks

Hmm double post.

This one is earlier so I'll take it as the one true one and you can delete the other if you like.

Also, good first post.

I'll get to the official greeting once I'm sure you're not a one post wonder.

You know this place is a difficult audience, right?

And now to substance.

What you did is OK, but you really don't have to give someone that age the whole Megillah.

You can just tell the kid life developed naturally and save the rest until you get more questions. If you're in a town with a natural history museum, those tend to be child friendly. There are also children's books on the subject.

You could explain it to him the way my dad explained it to me.

Well, son. One day your mom went the bathroom and made a turd so big that it wouldn't fit down the toilet so she had to keep it. It kept on growing, and well, here you are.

That's simple enough to remember. I still remember it 35 years later, and I turned out just fine. :P
Such potential!

I think to keep on a level that a 5-year-old can understand, you could answer that some people believe that. That being that a person called God made us. But the evidence (is "evidence" too fancy a word?) shows that we evolved from animals. There are men and women called scientists and their job is to study the world and look for evidence (clues) about how the world and the universe and all the plants and animals came to be. And their leading theory is that we evolved from simpler creatures. Then maybe try to find a book that is oriented to children that explains it and read it to him.

Or you could take the Mr. Garrison approach:

Hmm, 4 days from the OP to the first reply. Nobody saw this thread sooner? I don't think I saw it until today.
Whoever it was may have given up already. Hopefully not.
