## Charter schools

How can we expose more people to critical thinking?

### Charter schools

Charter schools are like private schools funded with public money. The theory is that by allowing competition, the best schools will prevail. Some are very good, but not all of them. Taken as a whole, they don't seem to be better than traditional public schools in aggregate. I liked this video from John Oliver on this issue:

A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.
William Shakespeare

It wouldn't have come up at all if the regular public schools weren't failing so badly.

No big mystery: When funding goes to hell, so does the level of service.

The US spends more per pupil than anybody, even the Swiss.

Maybe they are just plain not doing it right.

In the US it varies from school district to school district though. Each school district is funded by the community it serves, so the wealthiest communities have the best funded schools, and the poorest ones are the poorest.

The rich kids get more expensive toys and a free ride, but that does not equate to a good education.

That doesn't pertain to Charter schools or religious schools but certainly to high-end private schools.

The answer is probably. The key ingredient is the teacher. The private schools don't pay more than the public schools but nor do they [have to] suffer bad teachers. Or bad students. Problem kids get booted. Public schools can't do that. No bad teachers + no disruptive students = better education.

More Detroit Public School Principals Have Been Charged With Crimes in 2016 Than All the Charter School CEOs in John Oliver's Rant
Reason

Interesting, but might not be a fair comparison.

Maybe some of the Detroit Public School principals crimes aren't school related at all, such as armed robberies of convenience stores committed on their own time.

They just need more money for teachers, of course.

Earning $100,000 plus benefits for a 7 hour work day, for only 170 days compared to the typical 250 days of a full time worker is just not enough. Principles make upwards of $160,000. teachers can make up to$116,000 base pay.

This is all public information, these are state and local funds. Open government. Our local paper publishes the school employees making over \$75,000 every year, its mostly teachers.

What state are you in? I could show you how to look up how much you are paying teachers and administrators.

Come on. There is a Jewish (?) saying roughly along the line: "From dust we return to dust. But between the two there is alcohol single malt. How couldn't we dance?"

↑ Thanks Rob. The reference to money is cute.

But I was thinking of a Hasidic saying. I have a vague recollection of some groups (sects?) dancing, singing (& hyperventilating to get dizzy?), around a bottle of booze: from time to time one of the guys would step out of the circle to go get a swing.
But I'm not sure at all.

OK, no bottle, no circle.

Not only that, but there are about 97 public schools in Detroit, and (I presume) 97 principals. How many Charter School CEOs are there?
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"
