Moral somethingism

Post by gnome »

There is "moral relativism", "moral positivism" etc...

Is there (or could there be) a term for a moral philosophy that frequently assigns equal value to wrongs that most people would think are quite different in severity? Sort of a philosophical example of where every crime, no matter how minor, carries the death penalty. Or, inversely, where major crimes are too readily compared to trivial ones in ways that lessen their significance?

Something to tack "-ism" on that has to do with sameness or equivalence.

Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

Would "moral equivalism" (trying to duplicate the structure of other terms like "moral relativism") be a correct word then?

Moral equivalence is in fact the correct term even though it doesn't end with "ism".
There is a Wikipedia article about it.

Not to be confused with equivocation.

The more I think about it the more I realize the most descriptive possible term would be "somethingism".

No need to specify "moral somethingism". That is implicit in "somethingism".
