The last posts here made me laugh.

I'll contribute an anecdote (perhaps I already wrote about that, but there should be prescription by now) – from memory so I hope I don't mix things up. Ambroise Vollard, famous art merchant, once found two irate cabbies in front of his shop window. And what was heating them up? Some impressionist paintings, which they found "weren't art".

And about Van Gogh (pronounced like the Spanish jota), when you've spent some time on the hundreds of Impressionists at the Orsay Museum in Paris, I assure you you're very happy to finally get to his crazy paintings!

The Van Gogh museum is Amsterdam is fantastic. Doubly so if one sampled the local legalities first.

There's even a scotch bar if that's your thing. ;)

Agreed, mostly (been there a very long time ago). What put me off were the innumerable "predecessors" the museum showed with VG's early works. Tons of uninteresting, dull, muddy, dark, gloomy landscapes by unknowns. Yet makes you understand why he fled to the Mediterranean light.
Still worse were all the people using the provided loud headphones – made me wish I didn't understand the languages.
(Something very rough also happened in the waiting queue outside – pickpocket caught at work, I think.)

Nowadays I've seen (in Dijon) people connect with their tablets to various "information spots". Thankfully no noisy comments, but they just sit in a corner staring at the screen and then go away without really looking at the originals. Weird!

At $110.5 Million, Basquiat Painting Becomes Priciest Work Ever Sold By A U.S. Artist

Jean-Michel Basquiat "joined the pantheon of great, great artists" Thursday night, when the late painter's 1982 work Untitled sold for a record-breaking $110.5 million at auction — the highest sum ever paid at auction for a U.S.-produced artwork.

That breathless assessment was offered after the sale by Oliver Barker, chairman of Sotheby's Europe. So you can imagine just how thrilled the buyer must have been.

"I am happy to announce that I just won this masterpiece," Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa said in an Instagram post revealing his identity as the buyer. "When I first encountered this painting, I was struck with so much excitement and gratitude for my love of art. I want to share that experience with as many people as possible."

Jean-Michel Basquiat's Untitled was produced in 1982. The Los Angeles Times says that until shortly before Thursday's auction, it hadn't been shown in public since a private collector bought it for $19,000 in 1984.
Nice investment. And at least it's not a fucking Jackson Pollock piece of shit.

Matter of taste. I find Basquiat pretty awful, so…

But what amused me was the reasoning: lots of cash —> "joined the pantheon of great, great artists".
