The first phonographs simply amplified the sound vibrations of the needle with a big megaphone.

But might there not be a better way?

Such as hydraulics? :BigGrin3:

↑ Interesting. Swiss EPFL developed a turntable cartridge using a rounded glass fiber (instead of the usual diamond needle) to read the – hopefully still pristine – upper part of LP tracks. Many years ago.
Alas I never saw commercial results.
