The quarantines are occurring as the CDC said the highest number of cases have been reported since measles was declared eliminated in the U.S.
Nearly 300 students and employees at two Los Angeles universities were under quarantine Thursday after possible exposure to measles, a disease declared eliminated nearly two decades ago but which has seen a resurgence, the schools said.
The University of California, Los Angeles said that 76 students and six faculty members remained in quarantine Thursday afternoon after a student with measles attended class three days this month.
UCLA said that the last possible exposure at the university was April 9, and the highest risk for developing measles has already passed.
UCLA said that the quarantine was expected to last between 24 and 48 hours for most, but a few may need to remain in quarantine for up to seven days.
California State University, Los Angeles also reported that a potential measles exposure may have occurred in a library April 11, and a spokesman said that 127 staff employees and 71 student employees were sent home under quarantine orders.
In all, 280 from the universities were under quarantine Thursday.

ISLAMABAD — Two gunmen on motorcycle shot and killed a polio vaccinator in the southwestern Pakistani city of Chaman on Thursday, bringing the death toll among vaccinators working in the country’s anti-polio drive to at least three this week, officials said.
The shooters opened fire on a group of vaccinators when they were at the front gate of a house in the remote village of Sultan Zai, near the border with Afghanistan, said Samiullah Agha, who is the assistant commissioner of Chaman.

Polio vaccination teams have suffered several attacks since a countrywide vaccination drive began on April 23. Polio workers, volunteers and their guards are frequently targeted in the South Asian country. Islamist militants and hard-line clerics say the vaccination drive is a foreign plot to sterilize Muslim children and a cover for western spies.

Switzerland has registered two deaths from measles this year, health authorities said Thursday, stressing the importance of vaccinating against the highly contagious disease.
The health ministry warned that the number of measles cases was on the rise this year, with 155 people infected, including two who had died.
A man in his thirties, who had never been vaccinated against the disease, died after being infected by a family member, it said.
He had received the vaccination 67 hours after being exposed to the virus.
But "this post-exposure vaccination came too late: he developed measles," the health ministry said, adding that he died at home shortly after the first symptoms appeared.
A second man, in his 70s, whose immune system had been weakened by cancer, had meanwhile died shortly after developing pneumonia brought on by measles, it said, adding that it was unclear how he had been infected.
And for the Schadenfreude:

Well, this is some bad news:
Premature Vaccine Launch Has Deadly Repercussions
None of this has any bearing on the safety of the measles vaccine or other vaccines, of course. However, it will give ammunition to anti-vaxxers.
Premature Vaccine Launch Has Deadly Repercussions
Read the whole story, it's pretty interesting, although sad.The U.S. Food and Drug Administration just approved one of the most sought after vaccines in recent decades. It's the world's first vaccine to prevent dengue fever — a disease so painful that its nickname is "breakbone fever."
The vaccine, called Dengvaxia, is aimed at helping children in Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories where dengue is a problem.
But this vaccine has a dark — and deadly — history. One that has led to criminal charges in the Philippines, sparked national panic and fueled a massive measles outbreak that has already killed more than 355 people.
None of this has any bearing on the safety of the measles vaccine or other vaccines, of course. However, it will give ammunition to anti-vaxxers.

https://www.bbc.com/news/health-47940710Measles cases quadruple globally in 2019, says UN
The number of measles cases reported worldwide in the first three months of 2019 has quadrupled compared with the same time last year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The UN body said provisional data indicated a "a clear trend", with all regions of the world seeing outbreaks.
Africa had witnessed the most dramatic rise - up 700%.
The agency said actual numbers may be far greater, since only one in 10 cases globally are reported.
Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that can sometimes lead to serious health complications, including infections of the lungs and brain.
Ukraine, Madagascar and India have been worst affected by the disease, with tens of thousands of reported cases per million people.
Since September, at least 800 people have died from measles in Madagascar alone.
Outbreaks have also hit Brazil, Pakistan and Yemen, "causing many deaths - mostly among young children", while a spike in case numbers was reported for countries including the US and Thailand with high levels of vaccination coverage.
In total, some 170 countries reported 112,163 measles cases to WHO, in comparison to 28,124 cases across 163 countries during the same period in 2018.
The UN says the disease is "entirely preventable" with the right vaccines, but global coverage of the first immunisation stage has "stalled" at 85%, "still short of the 95% needed to prevent outbreaks".
[…]
There are two stories here - one of poverty and one of misinformation. In poorer countries fewer people are vaccinated and a larger portion of the population is left vulnerable to the virus.
This creates the environment for a large outbreak to occur - such as those in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kyrgyzstan and Madagascar.
But rich countries with seemingly high vaccination rates are seeing cases spike too. This is because clusters of people are choosing not to vaccinate their children due to the spread of untrue anti-vax messages on social media.

https://www.france24.com/en/20190503-pa ... nformationPakistan urges Facebook to take down polio vaccine misinformation
Pakistan urged Facebook to remove harmful polio-related content from the social networking site on Friday, saying it was jeopardising eradication initiatives and putting the lives of vaccinators at risk.
Polio vaccination campaigns have faced stubborn resistance for years in Pakistan.
In recent months Pakistani social media has been inundated with fake news reports and videos -- garnering thousands of views and shares in the last week alone -- claiming numerous children have been killed by the polio vaccine.
Thousands of parents have refused to allow their children to be inoculated.
"The parental refusals due to propaganda on Facebook regarding the vaccine is emerging as the major obstacle in achieving complete eradication of the virus," Babar Atta, who is helping oversee the country's vaccination drive, said in a statement.
Atta has requested "Facebook's management to block and/or manage the dissemination of such anti vaccination propaganda from their platforms operating from within Pakistan".
At least three people were killed in the last country-wide anti-polio campaign in April.
The violence coincided with an outbreak of hysteria in cities across northwest Pakistan after rumours of children suffering from adverse reactions to a polio vaccine sparked panic, with tens of thousands rushed to hospitals.
Last week, around 10,000 vaccination refusals were reported per day in Islamabad, compared to 200 to 300 during the previous campaign, according to figures from the country's anti-polio programme.

https://www.thelocal.ch/20190508/swiss- ... nti-vaxxerSwiss MPs call for fines for parents who fail to vaccinate kids against measles
In the wake of a recent spike in measles cases in Switzerland, a number of politicians in the country are calling for tougher measures to ensure people are vaccinated against the disease.
A total of 166 measles cases were recorded in Switzerland from January 1st to May 6th this year, according to the Federal Office of Public Health. (FOPH) That is eight times the figure of 21 cases recorded in the same period in 2018.
There have also been two deaths from the disease – a man in his thirties and another man in his seventies. Such deaths are rare in Switzerland.
Swiss health authorities say that a vaccination rate of 95 percent is required to eliminate the disease in the country. Currently, however, this rate is 87 percent for two-year-olds and 92 percent for 16-year-olds.
Now a number of Swiss politicians are calling for the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccination to be made compulsory.

https://www.vaccineconfidence.org/usa-d ... odox-jews/USA: Despite Measles Warnings, Anti-Vaccine Rally Draws Hundreds of Ultra-Orthodox Jews
MONSEY, N.Y. — An ultra-Orthodox rabbi falsely described the measles outbreak among Jews as part of an elaborate plan concocted by Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York to deflect attention from “more serious” diseases brought by Central American migrants.
A pediatrician questioned whether Jews were being intentionally given “bad lots” of vaccines that ended up giving children a new strain of the virus. And Andrew Wakefield, the British doctor whose study linking measles vaccines with autism was widely discredited and condemned, appeared via Skype to offer an almost apocalyptic vision of a world in which vaccines were giving rise to deadlier immunization-resistant diseases.
“We Hasidim have been chosen as the target,” said the rabbi, Hillel Handler. “The campaign against us has been successful.”
Since the measles outbreak began last fall, the health authorities have embarked on a sweeping and exhaustive campaign, repeatedly urging people to get vaccinated and fighting the spread of misinformation. They have made special efforts in the ultra-Orthodox communities of Brooklyn and Rockland County, N.Y., where the disease has been spreading most quickly.

Parents refuse to let child receive immunisation injections even after surviving Oregon's first case of disease in 30 years
An unvaccinated boy almost died after falling seriously ill with the first case of tetanus in one US state for more than 30 years.
The six-year-old spent two months in hospital with the bacterial illness after suffering a deep cut while playing in a farm in Oregon, according to a case study published by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
His care cost nearly $1m (£770,000), about 72 times the average for a paediatric hospitalisation in the US, noted the paper, in a case that has alarmed preventative medicine experts.
The unidentified child received an emergency dose of the tetanus vaccine in the hospital, but his parents declined to give him a second dose – or any other childhood immunisation injections – after he recovered.
A heavy case of the stupid. :|

A New York couple is behind more than $3 million in contributions to the anti-vaccine movement, including at two forums that serve the city’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. Hedge-fund manager Bernard Selz and his wife, Lisa, started donating to organizations that question the safety of vaccines about seven years ago, The Washington Post reports. The Selz Foundation provides roughly three-fourths of the funding to the Informed Consent Action Network, a three-year-old charity that promotes parental choice in vaccine safety. “They should be allowed to have the measles if they want the measles,” their group's spokesperson told reporters. “It’s crazy that there’s this level of intensity around a trivial childhood illness.”

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/0 ... on-levels/Measles outbreak in Dutch 'Bible Belt' village with low vaccination levels
Dutch health authorities said Tuesday they are dealing with a measles outbreak in a devout Protestant fishing village where vaccination rates are among the lowest in the country.
Nine children and one adult have been diagnosed with the disease in the village of Urk, part of the so-called "Bible Belt" in the northern Netherlands, the Flevoland province health service said.
The health service said it was "actively monitoring the situation" and examining whether it was necessary to vaccinate or administer antibodies to people who have been in contact with the infected patients.
"In 2013 and previously, the disease occurred more often on Urk. Many people on Urk have experienced this disease and that means that a natural defence has built up," it said.
Only 61.1 per cent of people are vaccinated against measles in Urk, one of the lowest rates in the Netherlands, where the national average is 92.9 percent, according to the National Public Health and Environment Institute.
Urk is regarded as one of the most devout of the villages in the "Bible Belt" of conservative Protestant communities running from Zeeland in the south of the Netherlands across the country to the north west.

https://www.precisionvaccinations.com/u ... -114-yearsIsraeli Court Overrules Anti-Vaxx Parents
An Israeli court ordered the immediate vaccination of a child against tetanus, despite his parents’ objection.
This vaccination decision could set a precedent as the anti-vaccination movement gains ground in Israel, reported the Times of Israel on July 11, 2019.
This court decision is related to a child who was badly burned and was taken by his parents to a local clinic for preliminary treatment. A pediatrician recommended tetanus shot to ensure the child’s wound didn’t result in infection by the potentially deadly pathogen.
People often call tetanus “lockjaw” because one of the most common signs of this infection is tightening of the jaw muscles.
Tetanus infection can lead to serious health problems, including being unable to open the mouth and having trouble swallowing and breathing, says the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The parents, who are opposed to vaccinations, refused to do so. The pediatrician then decided to report the incident to the local health office, which turned to the attorney general’s office and the Welfare Ministry, which filed a suit with the Hadera Family Court, asking for an urgent order to force the parents to vaccinate the toddler.

The number of measles cases in Rockland has hit 280 in the recent outbreak, according to the Rockland County Health Department.
County officials do not provide the number of active cases, just the total that have occurred since the measles outbreak began last fall.
Because measles is highly contagious for up to two hours after an infected person has left an area, health officials are alerting the public about a possible measles exposure on Friday, July 5, at Auction Mart appliance store in Monsey. People who were at the store, located at 75 Route 59, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. that day were at a risk of exposure.

According to the federal Centers for Disease Control, there have been 1,109 cases of confirmed measles in the U.S. so far this year. Cases have been detected in 28 states. Brooklyn and Rockland have had the highest numbers, mostly found in the Orthodox Jewish community. Rockland's outbreak started near the Jewish high holidays with visitors from Israel, where the measles has been an ongoing health concern.

Re: Anti-vaxxers in power
https://www.newscientist.com/article/22 ... ee-status/The UK has lost its World Health Organization ‘measles-free’ status
Three years after the measles virus was eliminated from the UK, the country has lost its “measles-free” status with the World Health Organization, following 231 confirmed cases of the infection in the first quarter of 2019.
The Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called for health leaders to renew their efforts to ensure 95 per cent of the population have had two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Current data suggests only 87.2 per cent of children receive the second dose of the vaccine, down from a high of 88.6 per cent during the 2014 to 2015 period.
“Measles is one of the most infectious diseases known to man – only one person travelling back to an area with lower vaccination rates can lead to an outbreak,” says Mary Ramsay, of the government agency Public Health England. “Anyone who has not received two doses of MMR vaccine is always at risk.”
To improve vaccination rates, NHS England will write to all GPs urging them to promote “catch-up” vaccination programmes. The body will also look at strengthening the role of local immunisation co-ordinators, in a bid to improve uptake of the vaccine.
Misinformation on social media
There are also plans to update advice on the NHS website to specifically address misleading information about vaccines. Social media companies are expected to be called to a summit to discuss how they can promote accurate information about vaccination.
Later this year, the NHS is expected to be asked to find technological solutions to identify who may have missed a vaccination, and to make booking appointments easier, as part of a new strategy developed by the Department for Health and Social Care.
“From reassuring parents about the safety of vaccines, to making sure people are attending follow-up appointments, we can and must do more to halt the spread of infectious, treatable diseases in modern-day Britain,” said Johnson.
The junior health minister Jo Churchill told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme today that the NHS and UK government need to work with social media companies so that “misinformation is taken down, and that we give people the correct information that they can help keep their children safe”.
