2020 Olympics: Japanese chains scrap porn magazines
Two of Japan's biggest convenience store chains have said they will stop selling pornographic magazines ahead of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, and the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year.
7-Eleven, which runs more than 20,000 shops in Japan, said it wanted "to create a proper shopping environment for all our customers".
Its rival, Lawson Inc, with some 14,000 stores, made a similar announcement.
Large numbers of tourists are set to visit Japan for both sporting events.
I tend to see things happen over here about a decade after the rest of the world. Looking around the train this morning I see a couple of people reading paperback books, but no newspapers or magazines. Everyone else has a smartphone. All the porn you could ever want to see is right there, so why would you ever buy a magazine?

Japan’s squid industry in crisis amid record low catches

Grilled, raw, stewed, dried, fermented, fried: squid has long been consumed with abundance in Japan, appearing in countless everyday dishes.

Now, however, Japan’s long-running love affair with squid is in danger, with growing reports that catches this season have hit a record low, causing prices to soar.

A drop in volumes of squid caught by Japanese fisherman has been attributed by experts to a combination of overfishing and rising sea temperatures due to climate change.

One region hit particularly hard is Hakodate on Japan’s northernmost island Hokkaido, a so-called “squid town” which has long enjoyed nationwide fame as a hub for all things squid, in particular the popular Pacific flying squid.

Despite peak squid fishing season normally taking place from June to January, as many as 90 per cent of Hakodate’s 20-strong fleet of squid fishing vessels have remained in port since October due to record low catches, according to Kyodo news agency.

Tokyo Medical University stripped of accreditation

Tokyo Medical University has been stripped of its accreditation, following recent revelations that the university rigged entrance examinations against female and older applicants.

A private organization, called the Japan Accreditation Council for Medical Education, made the decision at its board meeting on Thursday.

The council grants accreditation to medical schools in Japan, which they consider to have reached international standards. The accreditation is based on a 9-point assessment of the quality of education and governance. The council currently has 80 medical schools as its members.

The organization says this is the first time it has revoked accreditation since it started the system last year.

The council says the revocation is likely to prevent students or graduates of Tokyo Medical University from applying for doctors' licenses in the United States.
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20181122_35/
The Government is also penalizing them (and several other universities):

Government cuts off subsidies to Tokyo Medical University over entrance exam discrimination
The education ministry said Tuesday it will not provide any subsidies to Tokyo Medical University for this or the next fiscal year after the institution was found to have discriminated against female applicants in its entrance examinations.

The ministry said the decision is based on the indictment last year of university leaders over the backdoor admission of a bureaucrat’s son in exchange for a government subsidy.

Seven other universities that were similarly found to have manipulated their entrance exams will also have state subsidies reduced, according to the ministry.

Among them, Nihon University will face a 35 percent cut in the current fiscal year through March. In addition to admissions anomalies, the school’s management was called into question over a dangerous late tackle by one of its American football team members that injured an opposing team player in May last year. The foul play had been ordered by two coaches.

The six other universities — Fukuoka University, Iwate Medical University, Juntendo University, Kanazawa Medical University, Kitasato University and Showa University — will face a 25 percent cut in fiscal 2018.

“I demand that each university ensure the fairness of its entrance exams,” education minister Masahiko Shibayama said at a news conference.

Private schools in Japan receive state subsidies depending on the number of students and teachers.

In fiscal 2017, Tokyo Medical University received ¥2.3 billion and Nihon University ¥9.1 billion. Government payment of subsidies for fiscal 2018 was pending for the schools.

Tokyo Medical University admitted in August it had been deducting points from exam scores for over 10 years to curb the enrollment of women, as well as men who had failed the exam previously. Nihon University later said it had favored applicants who were kin of graduates.

The unfair treatment of female applicants at Tokyo Medical University was described as being aimed at preventing a shortage of doctors at affiliated hospitals, in the belief that women tend to resign or take long periods of leave after getting married or giving birth.
So roughly $20 million (per year) in Freedom Money. A not insignificant penalty I would imagine.

Yeah, although it used to be not uncommon to see oyajis (middle-aged men) on the train reading not porn-porn but tabloid newspapers with nudity (like the titty girls on page 3; that sort of tabloid). They didn't seem to make great efforts to hide it.

As far as whether porn is technically illegal, I believe that "obscenity" is illegal. Not "porn" per se.

As we all know though, it's hard to define "obscene" in a way other than "I know it when I see it". But someone had to come up with a definition and I think in Japan the definition they settled on is, if you can see genitals it's obscene, and if not, it's alright. Hence the pixilation. You can have almost any kind of porn you want as long as you can't get a clear look at anyone's genitals.

"Whitewashing" controversy comes to Japan:

Japanese sponsor accused of 'whitewashing' tennis star Naomi Osaka
(CNN)One of Naomi Osaka's Japanese sponsors has apologized after releasing an advertisement which has been widely accused of "whitewashing" the tennis star's skin tone.

The 2018 US Open winner is featured in the ad as an anime character for instant noodle giant Nissin, alongside fellow Japanese tennis player Kei Nishikori.
Critics allege the cartoon depicts Osaka, who is half Japanese and half Haitian, as having pale skin, light brown hair and Caucasian features.

I do know this much: she lives in the US, and English is her primary language. She can speak a little Japanese.

Also she won her match today to advance to the final round in the Australian Open.

Subaru probe finds 3,400 staff were not paid for overtime work

TOKYO – Subaru Corp on Friday said it did not pay overtime wages over a two-year period to some 3,400 employees who under-reported their hours, a revelation that surfaced in an internal probe following the 2016 suicide of an overworked employee.

The Japanese automaker, known for its Legacy and Forester cars, said the outstanding wages - from mid-2015 to mid-2017 and totaling 776 million yen - were paid retroactively to 3,421 workers last March.

The news was first reported in Japanese media on Friday after representatives of the deceased worker's family disclosed some of the findings this week.

In 2016, a 46-year-old white-collar worker jumped to his death from the roof of a Subaru factory in what authorities ruled as karoshi, or death from overwork. At the time, Subaru was enjoying bumper sales and profit due to the popularity of its cars in the United States, its main market.

In its probe, Subaru found the majority of workers it surveyed said they under-reported overtime hours "so as not to exceed the limit for the budget for overtime work".

It said it has since taken steps to make sure workers are unable to falsely report their actual work hours.

Long, long man.

And speaking of long things:

Sightings of rare oarfish in Japan raise fears of earthquake and tsunami
(CNN) Fears of an incoming natural disaster in Japan are swirling online after sightings of a deep-water fish believed to be a harbinger of earthquakes and tsunamis.

On Friday, two oarfish were discovered after being caught in fishing nets off the northern prefecture of Toyama, bringing the total found this season to seven. Earlier this week, a 3.2 meter (10.5 foot) oarfish washed up on the shore of Toyama Bay, while a 4-meter (13 foot) long oarfish was tangled in a fishing net off the port of Imizu.

The elusive oarfish live between 200 and 1,000 meters (650 to 3,200 feet) deep and are characterized by silvery skin and red fins.

Traditionally known as "Ryugu no tsukai" in Japanese, or the "Messenger from the Sea God's Palace," legend has it that they beach themselves on shores ahead of underwater earthquakes. But scientists dispute such claims.

"There is no scientific evidence at all for the theory that oarfish appear around big quakes. But we cannot 100% deny the possibility," Uozu Aquarium keeper Kazusa Saiba told CNN.

"It could be that global warming might have an impact on the appearance of oarfish or a reason we're just not aware of."

Weird for Japan or weird in general?
The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

I think it's weird even for Japan.

I think there's something a little bit like confirmation bias, where reporting on Japan tends to focus on weird stuff, because that's what people want to read about. Non-weird stuff is just boring and nobody is particularly interested in hearing about it.

Man arrested for buying cup meant for 100-yen coffee but pouring 150-yen latte into it

Basically just what it says, although it wasn't the first time he did it. He was a regular customer of the convenience store and he had pulled this little trick several times before, so I guess they decided they had enough.

In America these days, do they prosecute minor shoplifting?

Methinks the solution would have been to simply charge him the price of a latte.

Indeed. And tell him, we're on to your little scam. Knock it off.

A few months ago, I walked in to my local convenience store in Japan and found two clerks standing next to a yanki looking character. All three breathing hard. Turns out they caught him shoplifting and chased him down well away from the store. They had just dragged him back and were waiting on the police. I never did find out what the guy tried to steal, but I was impressed. I didn't think they'd do that here.

It probably varies according to jurisdiction. But back in my day they did. When I was a law student intern with the local prosecutor's office, my boss said she'd prosecute every shoplifting case the local merchants filed so as to protect them from a later civil suit for unlawful confinment.
