Online porn ‘produces the same amount of carbon emissions as all the households in France’
Russia Today
A new study brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘dirty movie’, as online porn has been found to be responsible for 100 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year.

The Shift Project’s ‘Climate crisis: The unsustainable use of online video’ report found that a third of all videos viewed online are porn, and that watching online adult entertainment emits just under 100 million tons of CO2 emissions. The emissions generated in 2018 were of the same “magnitude as that of the residential sector in France,” the report found.

Online videos generated 60 percent of the world’s data flows in 2018, which doesn’t include Skype videos or ‘camgirls’ live videos, and creates 300 million tons of CO2 emissions a year.

Video streaming services like Netflix account for a third of online videos, and created the same amount of emissions as the entire Chilean economy.

The report warns that emissions will continue to grow along with our increased viewing of online content and suggests limitations are put in place, such as not autoplaying videos and not using the highest possible resolution.

I think there's a thread on this a few years back that suggests streaming is at worst energy neutral -- and therefore, I suppose, carbon neutral -- because if you're not streaming, you're probably doing something more energy intensive, like driving back and forth to Blockbuster,... or visiting a prostitute,

I wonder how it compares to old fashioned broadcast TV? CRT TVs used more energy than modern LED displays, didn't they?

I used to wake up in the middle of the night and turn dad's satellite dish to the scrambled adult channels. Every so often I could make out a boob. Those were the good old days, when you would actually have to put effort into obtaining low quality smute.

"CRT TVs used more energy than modern LED displays, didn't they?"

Typical set dating back to the 60s, big mothers with nothing but tubes, no transistors yet could easily consume 500 Watts.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_set

Nothing much there at the linky about how much power they sucked up, but I once co-opted the power transformer out of one and by measuring the cross section of the center of the iron core, one could compute how much energy it would handle before it began to saturate. In excess of 500 watts. I rewound that core so as to build a power supply suitable for driving solid state audio amps. Took the complete windings down to a local irrigation pump re-manufacturing place and asked them if they'd dip it and bake it for me. They thought I was nuts, but they did it. Worked beautifully.

Back to the point: LED displays are pretty frugal on energy consumption. Like less than a hundred watts for a typical 42". Big plasma displays are friggin' energy hogs. They can consume almost as much as the monster Zenith did back in the good old days.

You mean the next one to hit Earth? Just asking because if so, it's unlikely that any of us will be alive to see it. But it is a lovely idea.

Didja watch the video?

The guy is a great big cock tease, because after explaining the scientific and technical issues, he concludes the power grid can take it.

Canada's power grid couldn't handle the last two solar flares, and I'm sure the US power grid is in much worse shape. It's ok though, I can still sort of remember those throat sounds that we used to use as kids to communicate. I might be able to teach the kids, who only know texts, emojis, and Snapchat, how to communicate with each other without their phones.

Big enough EMP will smoke the power grid, but it has to impact the Earth first and this is very unlikely. The one we've got to watch for is an EMP that fucks our protective magnetic field followed by a CME. A CME of sufficient energy, without the protective magnetic field will fry the hemishpere that takes the hit. If the CME lasts for 24 hours or more, goodbye all life on the planet.

There's a great sci-fi book based on this notion.

Relax sparks.

We're a helluva lot more likely to blow ourselves off the face off the Earth than any solar storm or cosmic event. :)

And we made it through the Cold War without getting nuked. Who saw that coming? :oldman:

True. And we are blowing ourselves off the face of the Earth, we merely decided to do it by slow poison rather than all at once.

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Just give every decent person's favorite faction of the ruling class more power, and all will be well. :)

And if you have to ask which faction that is you are not a decent person so begone!

Tolkien had the right idea.

Genetically engineer a new species that is capable of surviving the fallout of our human ways. A combination of pig, rat, cockroach, and mosquito should do it. A species that can be grown in, and nourished in a mound of excrement, blood, bottled water, and a tiny pinch of dark magic.
