Re: What was funny then
Because you become bow legged from riding horses.
Got it.
Funny. So funny that I'd buy a card with the joke so I could send it thru the mail (with my name on it so people would know that I think that it's funny) to someone that I know, thus announcing my idea of what funny is, and hoping that they'll laugh.
Seems reasonable.

That can't be it. Bow-leggedness is a disqualifying condition for the army. Navy maybe.
It's gotta be the missing belt.

I've seen a number of series that, after having jumped the shark, "showcase" the real life "talents" of the cast members.Abdul Alhazred wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2019 12:36 pm The book M*A*S*H (which ends with them going home at the end of their hitch) was a good bad book.
Not great literature by any means but a fun read.
The movie was a competent dramatization of the first half of the book, leaving the rest for the TV show.
As for the TV show, the one semi-funny schtick was Klinger, and that was snagged from Catch-22.
Which totally sucked even as a book and was made (if you can believe it) into an even suckier movie.
Unlike Heller, at least Norman Mailer wrote one good one before his long career as an overrated no good shit.
Alan Alda's "groucho" horror is one
Radar played drums in real life, I think they worked that in.
One of the characters in Laverne and Shirley ?? sang and they had him burst into song now and then. Horrible and wince-worthy.
I'm sure there are more vanity performance examples.

You are simply culturally insensitive. Much like those islam-O-phobes who just don't get the humor in

It's fake, of course:

Lots of old stuff get recycled that way, e. g.:

OP will chime in if need be, but I understood the thread as an inquiry into the changes of what is deemed funny.

Re: What was funny then
There are some recent almost universal behaviors that are pretty much lost now. I recall seeing a list of abbreviations (like SWAK) used on letters during the wars, most of which are alien to the modern eye. I am sorta thinking that these postcards contain an in joke that only folks around in the 1909 era would get. I mean really "Arf a mo' Tirpitz"??????
There are at least 5 different postcards in this series, each featuring the same guy.
I found a site (now lost) that went into a long disquisition on the second card claiming it was a gay icon. I think that they had a theory and found something that they could shoehorn in.
Anyway, the amusement that I get from these is not, I suspect, what was intended back in the day.

Friend, he's a sailor or at least wearing said livery and as we all know (gay porn don't lie) all sailors are up for a bit of fun.
