Every so often I like to go to broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera at my local movie house. When I do this, I mentally play a game called "The Opera if I Ignoring Subtitles", where I make my own story based only on what I see. I did this today with the opera Iolanta...

The story opens with a woman in a cube. There are maids tidying up the cube and she is conversing with them. Then we see a creepy old man with a hatchet, probably the serial killer who locked her in the cube, sitting outside. He ends up talking to Steve Buscemi and Kevin Smith who are on the way to a costume party dressed as an SS officer and a priest respectively. The serial killer lets Steve and Kevin see Cubegirl and they get into an argument which ends with Kevin Smith walking out and Steve Buscemi kind of upset and monologuing for a while.

Then Rowdy Roddy Piper and his best buddy Bowtie McPuffycoat show up. They talk and catch a glimpse of Cubegirl. Rowdy Roddy Piper wants none of this, he doesn't get involved with strange women in cubes but Bowtie McPuffycoat isn't a pro wrestler and can't afford to be as picky, so he enters the cube, has a few drinks and professes his undying love to Cubegirl. This flusters her so much she knocks over her floral arrangment.
Suddenly, Steve Buscemi, Kevin Smith and the serial killer show up with a bunch of maids in tow (I think the serial killer runs a cult composed entirely of maids, I dunno), He argues with Steve Buscemi for a while (Steve agrees with Rowdy Roddy Piper that getting involved with strange cubegirls is kind of odd, but is nice enough to talk McPuffycoat out of it). Eventually Kevin Smith gets bored and goes to play Blind Man's Bluff with Cubegirl.

Oddly turned on by playing Blind Man's Bluff with Kevin Smith, Cubegirl puts on a dress, makes everyone else dress in white (except for Steve Buscemi, who has a frankly creepy attachment to his SS officer costume) and they get married. The End

I had a very mixed reaction to that. His high notes were clear enough. But in the more rapid passaggio, he missed more notes than he hit--both times. For those he actually hit, he scooped up to them from flat--insufficient diaphragm support. Cringeworthy.

It's not an opera, and not a clip, but should have a very soothing effect. (Hey, it's nearly – depending on where you are – Monday, right?) Excellent interpretation, IMO.

his voice got better . . . a few solo albums later. Phil sang it better, but then Peter did not know his limitations. Later, years later, he would re-record some of his parts from old live recordings.

Ending to one of the best Rock Operas written--fortunately, the music was not written by Gabriel.
