The funniest professional comedy shtick contemporary with Joey Bishop was Jerry Lewis' "pretending to have cerebral palsy" routine.

So cut Joey a little slack. :BigGrin3:

To me, no.

By the standards of the time. The past is a foreign country.

Joey Bishop. Almost as unfunny as Seinfeld.
True that. Nobody who makes a living at comedy is as unfunny as Seinfeld, but Bishop is close, probably about as close as Will Ferrell. And Jackie Mason.

Hey ed!

Remember Buddy Hackett's Chinese waiter routine? That one was considered embarrassingly bad even at the time, though nobody made him stop.

And this one pushed the limit to the point where people complained and got it pulled even back in the early 1960s.

What do you notice about this 1966 performance?

About George Lincoln Rockwell and the American Nazis. Everybody hated them, but no one tried officially to suppress them. Playboy Magazine even sent Alex Haley to interview Rockwell, which exercise in morbid fascination somehow did not result in him gaining followers. And liberal students when he spoke at Stamford University demolished him in the question and answer session that followed.

That is what a secure liberal democracy looks like.

A foreign country indeed. :|

Waymo to customers: “Completely driverless Waymo cars are on the way”

Waymo, the autonomous vehicle business under Alphabet, sent an email to customers of its ride-hailing app that their next trip might not have a human safety driver behind the wheel, according to a copy of the email that was posted on Reddit. The email entitled "Completely driverless Waymo cars are on the way" was sent to customers that use its ride-hailing app in the suburbs of Phoenix.

A boring article. But it led me to ...

n 1896 Alfred Sennett warned, “We should not overlook the fact that the driving of a horseless carriage calls for a larger amount of attention for he has not the advantage of the intelligence of the horse in shaping his path, and it is consequently incumbent upon him to be ever watchful of the course his vehicle is taking.”

We've come full circle.
