That movie was late in that game.

That one had the advantage of being made into a movie though, which is the only reason I (and a lot of other people) ever discovered it.

It's an old joke but it's true in my case. I was literally channel surfing one day (remeber doing that?) and saw Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood in Old West Garb and watched, then was kind of weirded out when they broke into song...but kept watching.

Might've been different if either one of them could carry a tune in a bucket, but we can't have everything. :)

Frankly, I think their inability to sing added a bit of veracity to the movie. No one expects a cranky old prospector to be able to sing

I'd have gone with "The Mummy" over "The Phantom of the Opera", but I guess they didn't want to double up on Karloff.

To be fair to Mr. Marvin, he didn't really try to sing. He talked his lyrics. :)

Spoiler:
Camazotz ("death bat"), Mayan bat god, from Isabal or Alta Verapaz.
Wikipedia wrote:In the Popol Vuh, Camazotz are the bat-like monsters encountered by the Maya Hero Twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque during their trials in the underworld of Xibalba. The twins had to spend the night in the House of Bats, where they squeezed themselves into their own blowguns in order to defend themselves from the circling bats. Hunahpu stuck his head out of his blowgun to see if the sun had risen and Camazotz immediately snatched off his head and carried it to the ballcourt to be hung up as the ball to be used by the gods in their next ballgame.

In Part III, chapter 5 of the Popol Vuh, a messenger from Xibalba, in the form of a man with the wings of a bat, brokers a deal between Lord Tohil and mankind, wherein mankind promises their armpits and their waists (the opening of their breasts in human sacrifice) in exchange for fire.

On this day 81 years ago, Orson Welles aired his radio adaptation of HG Wells' WAR OF THE WORLDS. Famously, with no social media to check for the truth, many listeners thought the invasion was real. D'oh. Original illustration by Henrique Alvin Correa.
