Things you have seen or done that are fun

Post by ed »

I'm thinking one liners mostly.

What you did and what would be cool. Unusual things, things that are not easily repeatable or are sorta interesting by their nature. Sorta stuff you might tell to enliven a flagging conversation. It may sound like bragging but these are the sorts of things that, by their nature, are self referential.
point is they should be things that YOU think are fun. Not important, FUN. For example circumnavigating the globe would be cool though I don't think I'd care to do it. Flying in a Jet Fighter would be cool. Flying in a biplane would be cool. Going down into the Challenger Deep would be cool. Trekking across Tibet would be cool. Having met Roy Chapman Andrews would be very cool. Blowing up a tank (or a car or something) with an RPG would be cool. Handling a First Folio or the original Beowulf would be cool. Going thru the Panama Canal is cool. Seeing a volcano erupt is way cool.

:x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x
:x n.b. Anyone posting Snowflake events (I spent a night in a Yurt) will be mercilessly hunted down and pantsed on the main street of Myakka City
:x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

I'll go first. Not many things which is sorta sad.

I saw Burton and Taylor in Private Lives on Broadway. (I walked up to the stage after, Elizabeth was chatting with the ladies who walked up to talk to her. I needed to see and, Yes, her eyes were violet)

Saw Tommy Tune and Twiggy in My One and Only (god, she was cute)

I flew Concord (which was very cool)

Spent an afternoon with a Viscount in the UK.

Shook hands with a man who was on the Andria Doria when it went down.

Gave a speech in front of a few thousand people (never again, ever)

Almost forgot. I bought a drink for the man that wrote Satisfaction. Bloody fucking Keef :D In restaurant in Westport CT.

I'd like to:

I'd like to jet over to London with my son to see Henry V in the Globe then come home the next day.

Take a cruise ship to Europe (or the reverse). I'd just like to see what those alive in the says of sail saw.

Shoot a minigun

All of the really fun things I did happened before I was 22. I spent two years doing this:

Not actual footage but just like that. I was a flight deck troubleshooter, one of the green shirts. Not only the most fun, but the most stressful and exhausting too.
For example circumnavigating the globe would be cool though I don't think I'd care to do it.

Been there, done that, twice. Once at the antarctic circle. Meh.
I flew Concord (which was very cool)
I catapulted off aircraft carriers on cargo planes several times. It doesn't get old. Flying 10 hours in that same cargo plane while sitting in web jump seat gets really old.
Going thru the Panama Canal is cool.
Suez is cooler but really not that cool.

I've also gotten fall down drunk in at least a dozen countries. I guess that was fun. It's hard to remember.

All cool. Do they toss you into the drink the first time you cross the equator or is that from the age of sail?

Hey ed!

All those great things you mentioned including some that are no more. The only one I really envy is the Concorde.

Yet you failed to mention riding the Myrtle Avenue el. :p

:D

There is that. Three are impossible now, the two theater things and Concorde.

I am glad that you didn't regale us (again) with your blintz eating adventure on Michigan Ave. Once was enough.

Shellback initiation. The Order of Neptunus Rex. You don't want to know. It isn't pretty.

Order of the Red Nose for crossing the antarctic circle (aka blueballs initiation) isn't as gruesome, but much colder.

I'm sayin', it's not all shaking hands with a man who was on the Andria Doria when it went down, but it's right up there.

In the last few years, some of the coolest things I’ve seen:

Scuba diving has many, but one of the easiest to describe was being inside a “tornado” of large barracuda.

Nothing special for good pilots, but the first time I rode a thermal 1,000’ above take off paragliding was pretty fucking cool.

On the professional side, I did a last-minute (nearly simultaneous) interpretation gig in front of about 500 people. Thankfully, it was on a subject I knew well as that was at the very extreme limit of my Japanese ability.

A few years ago, I did a different event with Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and then a small group of us took her out to dinner and a tour of Kyoto the next day.

As for things I’d like to see, I’ve heard the Smithsonian and British Museums are very cool.

I did. 8)

But I missed out on Freedomland in the Bronx (now site of Coop City).

As with Palisades Amusement Park, they were running it to pay the real estate taxes until a favorable time to build big.

Freedomland. They used silver dollars as entry tokens. I need to find the home movies, digitize them then edit them then post them ... or not.

You say “formerly.”

Don’t tempt me with such worldly pleasures if it is no longer extant.

This is not me, this is Ray Bethell what he is doing is kite ballet. This usually requires one swingin' dick per kite. I was one of those in contests around the country. Serious, no shit, serious fun was had.

This is me. These are Indian fighter kites which are inherently unstable in order to...well fight. These boys play nice though.

Music is Enya, you'll live.

British museum is prob the best of all the London museums (and there are a lot!)
