I got to ride an elephant in a circus

A distant relative of mine owned a circus, back when I was 6 or 7 or so. When it can me to my town, he let me ride it during a procession into the ring
The Luggage said nothing, but louder this time.

In the last few years, some of the coolest things I’ve seen:

Scuba diving has many, but one of the easiest to describe was being inside a “tornado” of large barracuda.

Nothing special for good pilots, but the first time I rode a thermal 1,000’ above take off paragliding was pretty fucking cool.

On the professional side, I did a last-minute (nearly simultaneous) interpretation gig in front of about 500 people. Thankfully, it was on a subject I knew well as that was at the very extreme limit of my Japanese ability.

A few years ago, I did a different event with Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and then a small group of us took her out to dinner and a tour of Kyoto the next day.

As for things I’d like to see, I’ve heard the Smithsonian and British Museums are very cool.
British museum is prob the best of all the London museums (and there are a lot!)
The Tower Armouries WERE the best for armor and the like till they moved the collection to Leeds for reasons that are too stupid to even think about. As it is the collection at Leeds is very well done. I wonder if they have managed to include some black faces among the mannequins :D

I visited the National Palace Museum in Taipei. I was very impressed. My girlfriend was ready to go after a few hours, but I could have stayed there all weekend. I remember thinking, “No wonder the Chinese are pissed off Chiang and friends grabbed all this stuff on their way out. But good thing they did or those fucking Red Guard fools would have smashed everything to pieces.”

Elephants are very cool. Especially up close. In Laos, our guide gave me half a banana to put in my pocket for a baby elephant to pull out. I’d post the video, but it’s too easily mistaken for a pornographic trunk job.

The British is great.

Absolutely incredible stuff from the Fertile Crescent.

You can also make comparisons between the styles from the Germanic, Slavic and Mediterranean worlds (arms and jewelry mostly) which I found fascinating.

That being said London is (or was at the time) very dirty/polluted and my jacket was good for cleaning after just four days.

another thought about something that was fun. I was given a tour of the bowels of the Met in NY, the Arms and Armor department actually. I think something like 15%(?) of their holdings are on display. Their storage is pretty impressive.

I swam with whale sharks in the Gulf of Mexico. I felt very small in that deep water with those majestic creatures. It was better than cave diving which was neat too. I’m glad to have the memories.

Cenotes in the Yucatán peninsula. Eerie, cold, and DARK, but the contrast to the outside was amazing and strangely satisfying. You can lose track of up vs. down. The experience was a little scary but fun. Each cave was distinct, but they all had similarities like the vines that climbed through from above.

Yes! Pre kids the wife and I went to a couple of denotes down there. Very different, one was almost a mangrove swamp (but super clear water) and the other was a half underground cave system with turtles swimming around (“gran cenote “ iirc). Went swimming in both, and also canoed through the mangrove one. Fun times!

Saw mantas feasting with birds diving in from overhead, but didn’t get a chance to hop in and have a look. Sounds like FUN!

It was a vacation with the kids. Seeing little peanuts with these critters was pretty fun. You go out to flats outside of the harbor where the fishermen gut their catch. You can grab them and stick your hands in their mouths. I liked that the kids could see these scary "devil fish" were attractive and harmless.

ETA. For clarity... I an not referring to the fishermen when I say you grab them and so on.

Not us.

Abdul take note.
As a child my next door neighbor worked for "the railroad." At some point me little kiddo butt along with me dad got to ride in an engine from somewhere to an Atlanta repair facility.
Did Westinghouse do trains?

Singing Men of Herlech, men of my fathers. :)

Shit happens. The older you get, the more often shit happens. So you have to try not to give a shit even when you do. Because, if you give too many shits, you've created your own shit creek and there's no way out other than swimming through the shit. Oh, and fuck.
