I finally did it.

Ditched Firefox. As one of my every day browsers, that is. Of course it still has a place of honor in my browser collection.
Still use Tor (which is Firefox based) for the occasional dodgy stuff and to get around regional restrictions.

Now it's Slimjet for nearly everything. I have already been using it for a while for business purposes.

Chromium based, but does not call home except for periodic updates (asks politely before installing).
Yes I checked and did not take their word for it.

https://www.slimjet.com/en/featurelist.php
https://www.slimjet.com/en/webhelp/index.htm

AdBlock completely integrated with the browser.

Additional extensions installed:

NoScript (I consider this absolutely essential)
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... cbfeoakpjm

A little thingy to prevent YouTube from auto playing.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... dfnejkpegd

I also checked out the Brave browser, but decided it was too unstable for everyday use.

What? You stopped using this???

I use Brave for everyday use. Works a treat.

I have an image of the original install floppy. It will install but not run. Something about Windows 3.1 sockets being missing.

I switched to Mozilla when it came out (my post about it is somewhere here).

The last version of Netscape (the number slips my mind) will run on Win 7, but I don't have it installed.

Most of my browser collection is disk imaged on CD.

Currently installed:
Firefox 28 -- This is the least recent version that can handle current YouTube. All I deleted was the desktop shortcut.
Tor -- Always the latest.
Slimjet -- Always the latest.

And of course :)

You should use the 1996 style template!

Addendum:

It turns out Slimjet's built in ad blocker is not 100% compatible with YouTube, so I whitelisted YouTube and added an extension which is a YouTube specific ad blocker.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... edklmejhmh

The two YouTube specific extensions and the way I have configured them are together exactly equivalent to a Greasemonkey script I was running on Firefox.

Addendum:

The Brave browser folks have finally released version 1.0 . I have installed it and tested it a little, and apparently they have fixed the issue that concerned me before.

I will probably play with it some more later, but doe now it is merely back in my collection.

Also a general observation -- I have been 100% Flash free for a while (including Firefox).

Only thing I don't like about the Brave browser is the nudging to sing up to get paid to look at ads. Otherwise it seems pretty good.

It's an interesting business model.

Update:

Disabled the native ad blocker, added Ad Block Plus (what I had on Firefox),
got rid of the special You Tube ad blocker (not needed with Ad Block Plus).

I may do a comparison.

Not right now.

Checked it out.
I still prefer "Reader View".
https://add0n.com/chrome-reader-view.html

What I particularly like is the "Switch to Reader View" context-menu item, while being able to make the rest of the stuff nearly invisible.

But like you, I find I'm not using it much.
Basically for the occasional link to Fox News which is a particularly ill behaved site.

Once you've gotten rid of the ads, pop-ups & overlays, most sites are OK-ish. (I had to use un-modded Edge recently, the experience made me wonder how people put up with that.)
