Majority of anti-vaxx ads on Facebook are funded by just two organizations

Study finds Robert F Kennedy Jr’s World Mercury Project and Larry Cook’s Stop Mandatory Vaccinations bought 54% of ads

The majority of Facebook ads spreading misinformation about vaccines are funded by two organizations run by well-known anti-vaccination activists, a new study in the journal Vaccine has found.

The World Mercury Project chaired by Robert F Kennedy Jr, and Stop Mandatory Vaccinations, a project of campaigner Larry Cook, bought 54% of the anti-vaccine ads shown on the platform during the study period.

“Absolutely we were surprised,” said David Broniatowski, a professor of engineering at George Washington University, one of the authors of the report. “These two individuals were generating the majority of the content.”

Cook uses crowd-funding platforms to raise money for Facebook ads and his personal expenses. The crowd-funding platform GoFundMe banned Cook’s fundraisers in March 2019. YouTube has demonetized Cook’s videos.

Kennedy is the son of the former US attorney general Bobby Kennedy. He also has a nonprofit focused on environmental causes. Kennedy’s brother, sister and niece publicly criticized his “dangerous misinformation” about vaccines in May. They called his work against vaccination, “tragically wrong”.

Samoa declares state of emergency as measles outbreak claims lives

Samoa's Government has declared a state of emergency, ordering all schools, including the National University of Samoa, to be closed as a deadly measles outbreak continues to spread.

Since Samoan officials announced a measles epidemic in October, seven suspected measles-related deaths have been recorded.

The majority of cases have involved children younger than four years old.

The Samoan Government ordered children under the age of 17 not to attend public gatherings in an attempt to stop the virus spreading.

It also made vaccinations a mandatory legal requirement for all people of Samoa who have not yet received a vaccination injection.

Germany passes law making measles vaccination compulsory for children

Teachers and hospital staff must also be immunised, law says

Germany’s parliament has approved a law making it compulsory for schoolchildren to be vaccinated against measles.

The measure passed with a massive majority on Thursday, mandating that all children who attend school or nursery must be inoculated.

Politicians approved the government bill by 459 in favour to 89 against. There were 105 abstentions.

The law means parents who are unable to prove their offspring have been vaccinated against measles by 1 August 2021 - or those who refuse - will be fined up to €2,500 (£2,150).

Jens Spahn, Germany’s health minister, said compulsory vaccination was necessary because of an increase in cases of measles, a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease.

Wrong.
HPV Vaccine Prices

The real HPV vaccine prices have fallen steeply over the last few years in many European countries, thanks to competitive tendering. For instance, the price per dose in Italy dropped under €30 in recent regional tenders and even sunk under €20 in the Netherlands; experts commonly felt there were similar drops in national tenders in Sweden and the UK (both countries where awarded prices are kept confidential).

This experience showed that prices can drop steeply even when competition is minimal, i.e. only two manufacturers, if vaccines are judged basically equivalent by health authorities for their main health target, i.e. CC prevention in the case of HPV vaccination.

Furthermore there are numerous programs providing the vaccine for free or at low cost. Exempli gratia:
How much does it cost?

The HPV vaccine is provided free in schools for girls and boys aged 12–13 years as part of the National HPV Vaccination Program.

Girls and boys aged up to 19 who are not in the eligible school year levels can also obtain two doses of the vaccine for free from their local immunisation provider or doctor as part of the ongoing program. Those aged 15 or older at the time of their first vaccination require three doses for best protection.
http://www.hpvvaccine.org.au/the-hpv-vaccine/cost.aspx
Merck Vaccine Patience Assistance Program:

Merck offers a vaccine assistance program to those who desire to receive Gardisil 9. To qualify, you must:
• Be between the ages of 19 and 26
• Be uninsured
• Live in the United States, although you don't have to be a U.S. citizen
• Have an annual income less than $47,520 for individuals,$64,080 for couples or $97,200 for a family of four Merck does take special circumstances into account and often makes exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Do not let the income qualifications deter you from applying. You may still be approved based on your specific situation. Applying for the Merck Vaccine Patient Assistance Program is easy. Simply visit the Merck website and download and print the application. Return the completed application to your doctor's office. Your doctor's office will submit the application to Merck, who will notify the office of a decision the same day. It is important to note that the application must be completed and approved by Merck prior to getting the vaccination. https://www.verywellhealth.com/how-much ... ost-514124 And from as far back as 2013: Millions of girls in developing countries to be protected against cervical cancer thanks to new HPV vaccine deals Cape Town / Geneva, 9 May 2013 – A new record low price for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines will help ensure millions of girls in developing countries can be protected against cervical cancer. Thanks to the GAVI Alliance, the poorest countries will now have access to a sustainable supply of HPV vaccines for as low as US$ 4.50 per dose. The same vaccines can cost more than $100 in developed countries and the previous lowest public sector price was$13 per dose.

HPV vaccines are primarily available as part of routine immunisation to girls in relatively wealthy countries. And yet of the 275,000 women in the world who die of cervical cancer every year, more than 85% are in low-income countries, where the incidence of HPV infection is higher and few women have access to screening and treatment.
https://www.gavi.org/hpv-price-announcement

I'll also add that when you're a teen you probably don't know what kind of sex life you will have…

Now to support your claim you just have to show that screening is cheaper and has the same efficiency as the vaccine and associated programs. ("Hey, I'll just get myself tested.")

'There are no words': Samoa buries its children as measles outbreak worsens

In six weeks, a measles outbreak has infected 3,000 people out of a population of 200,000, killing 42, mostly children

Samoa, which is 4,300km east of Sydney and graduated to developing country status in 2014, is known to most people outside it as a peaceful, tropical holiday destination. But over the last six weeks, the country has been gripped by a devastating measles outbreak. There have been more than 3,000 confirmed cases in a country of just 200,000 people and 42 people have died, 38 of them children under four.
...
The world’s most infectious disease has spread throughout much of the developed world this year, and while some countries have suffered devastating losses as a result, developed countries have seen comparatively little loss of human life. New Zealand recently suffered its worst epidemic in 20 years – 2,000 people were infected, none died.

Samoa has a huge diaspora community in New Zealand making it inevitable that measles would eventually reach Samoan shores. When it arrived, it reached a population with devastatingly low vaccination rates and a health service ill-equipped to meet the challenge of such an epidemic.

Samoa’s total population immunity has been estimated by the WHO to be as low as 30-40%, compared with its Pacific neighbours, such as Tonga and American Samoa, which boast immunisation rates of over 90%, close to or matching recommended rates for achieving immunity.

The immunisation rates of babies have plummeted in recent years. Four years ago, roughly 85% of one-year-olds were vaccinated, in 2017 that dropped to 60%.

But since then the rate plummeted sharply, after a scandal that rocked Samoa in 2018, when two Samoan nurses administered MMR vaccines to babies who subsequently died. The nurses pleaded guilty to negligence causing manslaughter and were sentenced to five years in prison after it emerged that one of the nurses mixed the MMR vaccine powder with expired muscle relaxant anaesthetic instead of water for injection.

People lost trust in the government and in immunisation programs, meaning that by 2018, only 31% of children under five had been vaccinated.

Just depends on how big they are, and how they're ... prepared. Done Southern style (50 gallons of 10W-30 over several 30,000 btu propane cookers) would take less time than that. Alternately, there are several recipes for 'Pulled Long Pork' in the Jeffrey Dahmer "How I Did It" cookbook.

Samoa measles outbreak: Five more die in measles-ravaged Samoa
Dec 04 2019

Five people have died overnight in Samoa, bringing the death toll to 60 as the measles epidemic continues to kill the most vulnerable.

Of the 60 that have died, 54 were children under the age of 15, while 25 were babies aged less than one year old. Three deaths have now been recorded for adults over the age of 19.

In the last 24 hours a further 171 cases have also been confirmed by the Ministry of Health.

### Re: Anti-vaxxers in power

This may explain why the vaccination rate in Samoa plummeted in recent years:

Measles outbreak spurred by anti-vaxxers shuts down Samoan government
The government of Samoa will shut down for two days this week while officials try to curb a deadly measles outbreak that has sickened 3,728 and killed 53—48 of whom were children ages 0 to 4 years old.
. . .

In response, officials there have closed schools, barred children from public gatherings, and begun an intensive vaccination campaign. Since November, the government has reported vaccinating over 58,000 people.

But officials have their work cut out for them. The World Health Organization and UNICEF estimated that Samoa’s measles vaccination rate for infants was just 31% in 2018. That’s down from about 60% to 70% in earlier years and a high of 90% in 2013.

The drop may be partly explained by the tragic deaths of two infants in July 2018, according to the WHO. The infants died on the same day at the same hospital, shortly after they had each received what was supposed to be an MMR vaccine (which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella).

While some quickly blamed the vaccine itself, officials later determined that two nurses had improperly prepared the immunizations. Investigators found that they had mixed in a lethal dose of muscle relaxant, and one of the nurses tried to cover up the error by taking the empty bottle of the muscle relaxant home after retrieving it from the garbage. The two faced charges of manslaughter and were both sentenced to five years in prison in August of this year.

Still, news of the heartbreaking deaths shook the island nation’s confidence in the healthcare system. And anti-vaccination groups pounced on the circumstances. Most notably, the deaths were picked up by the Children’s Health Defense, run by the prominent anti-vaccine advocate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. As The Washington Post noted, Kennedy’s organization spent months highlighting the deaths on Facebook while questioning the safety of the MMR vaccines. But the organization did not correct the posts or update its audience with information regarding the nurses’ error and convictions.

Kennedy visited Samoa in June, appearing alongside local anti-vaccine advocates and even a staff member of the US embassy. In November, Kennedy’s organization sent a letter to the Samoan prime minister, encouraging officials to question the MMR vaccine. Kennedy peddles the false and dangerous claim that vaccines are linked to autism, despite the fact that numerous scientific studies have robustly debunked the baseless claim.

On Sunday, Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi encouraged residents to fight back against misinformation. “Let us work together to encourage and convince those that do not believe that vaccinations are the only answer to the epidemic,” he said.
I wonder why it was left to nurses to "prepare" the vaccines in 2018? I thought they came in pre-filled syringes direct from the factory??
Having nurses prepare them manually introduces the possibility of human error (or even intentional maliciousness).

No it hasn't but it's contained in two places (that we know of). One is about a half mile as the virus flies from me the other is somewhere in Russia. And there does not seem to be a wild reservoir the same is the case for measles. But given the propensity of virus to mutate and sheer human cussedness that could change.

Funny and completely off topic story.

Some years ago the small engine manufacturer Tecumseh introduced a new line of engines mostly designed for lawnmowers. They called it Vector and their advertising mascot....

As Fid said, it's kept in military gubment labs (US & Russia), in case the radioactive fallout isn't enough to wipe us out:
The last cases of smallpox occurred in an outbreak of two cases, one of which was fatal, in Birmingham, United Kingdom, in 1978. A medical photographer, Janet Parker, contracted the disease at the University of Birmingham Medical School and died on September 11, 1978.[1] In light of this incident, all known stocks of the smallpox virus were destroyed or transferred to one of two World Health Organization reference laboratories which had BSL-4 facilities—the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States and the State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology VECTOR in Koltsovo, Russia.[2] Since 1984, these two labs have been the only ones authorized by the WHO to hold stocks of live smallpox virus.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smallpox_ ... ion_debate
The Aral smallpox incident was a July 30, 1971 outbreak of the viral disease which occurred as a result of a field test at a Soviet biological weapons (BW) facility on an island in the Aral Sea. The incident sickened ten people, of whom three died, and came to widespread public notice only in 2002.

WHO, CDC data shows measles cases up 30 percent globally

The disease killed more than 140,000 people worldwide in 2018, despite the availability of a vaccine.

Although 2018 was a relatively quiet year for the disease in the U.S. -- with just 372 confirmed cases -- nearly 9.8 million people were diagnosed with measles globally, and more than 140,000 died from it, despite availability of a vaccine.

And this year, the disease has been far more prevalent in the U.S., with more than 1,200 cases to date -- the highest total in more than 25 years.

Both the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlighted the importance of vaccination Thursday as they released their final measles surveillance figures for 2018.

"That anyone should die from measles -- against which a safe, effective and affordable vaccine has existed for over 50 years -- is a collective failure which must be addressed," Katrina Kretsinger, WHO medical officer for measles, told UPI.

According to the WHO and CDC, measles cases surged globally in 2018 due to a series of "devastating outbreaks in all regions."

In all, there were 9.7 million estimated measles cases and 142,300 related deaths worldwide in 2018. Although this figure is down significantly from the more than 28 million cases reported in 2000, the first year the WHO started recording measles data, it shows an approximately 30 percent increase year-to-year from 2017, when there were an estimated 7.6 million cases and 124,000 deaths.

Southeast Asia had the highest share of measles cases and deaths, with more than 3.8 million and 39,000, respectively. However, Europe also had more than 850,000 cases as well, due in large part to declines in vaccination rates in countries such as France, Greece and the Britain.

Malaysian Infant Diagnosed With Polio, Becoming The First Case In 27 Years

A 3-month-old infant from Malaysia has been diagnosed with polio, becoming the first case in the nation in 27 years.

According to media reports, the baby boy from Borneo island tested positive for the viral illness on 6 December, Friday after being admitted to the hospital with a fever and muscle weakness.

Director-General of Health Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement that the boy – despite being in a stable condition and contained in an isolation ward – still requires assistance to breathe.

According to test results, the infant’s virus shares genetic links with the recent polio outbreak in the Philippines.

N.J. bill to remove religion as reason to avoid vaccinating kids enrages parents at hearing

Unpersuaded by hundreds of pleading and occasionally hostile parents, a state Senate panel voted Thursday to eliminate religion as an acceptable reason for New Jersey children to avoid vaccines required for school attendance.

After seven years of stalled efforts to compel better vaccine compliance and a recent reemergence of measles, state lawmakers are moving quickly to end the religious exemption that allowed 14,000 students to decline their shots last year.

The Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee approved the bill (A3818) by a 6-4 vote Thursday. Even before the hearing, the measure was listed on Monday’s agenda for action by the full 40-member body.

But hundreds of parents amassed outside the Statehouse in Trenton anyway. The crowds started arriving hours before the afternoon hearing. Hundreds of sign-waving, child-toting parents queued up in the first-floor hallway waiting for space inside the committee room. Before the hearing began, the audience recited the “Serenity Prayer."

They said they were outraged by what they see as government intrusion in violation of their First Amendment right of religious freedom. They vowed to pull their children out of school or move out of New Jersey.

Two killed in attack targeting polio vaccination team in Pakistan

Officers killed while on their way to accompany a polio vaccination team in northwest Lower Dir district.

...

Since 2012, at least 98 people have been killed in attacks targeting polio vaccination teams in Pakistan, according to an Al Jazeera tally.

On Monday, Pakistan launched its latest National Immunisation Day, aiming to reach more than 39 million children under the age of five across the country with polio and other routine immunisations.

More than 260,000 staff take part in each immunisation effort, which involves vaccination teams being sent door to door in every district across the country of 207 million people.

...

Pakistan's efforts to eradicate the debilitating disease, which targets children and can cause paralysis or loss of limb function, have been hampered for years by false rumours regarding the effects of the vaccine, including conspiracy theories alleging that it is part of a plot to sterilise or otherwise harm Muslims.

Worldwide efforts to eradicate the disease through the use of vaccine have largely been successful, reducing the number of cases from more than 350,000 in 1988 to 33 in 2018, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

It remains endemic, however, in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria, although the West African nation has not reported a case since 2016.
