The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

I should explain (since no one seems to have noticed anyway)
Back in the day you could get adapters that would allow you to shoot 4mm ammunition out of a 9mm or 7.65mm Luger (or other firearm) so that you could shoot in in your parlor. Safely. Sorta.

There were things known as Parlor Pistols that folks would use for target shooting in the old living room.

Here are some 4mm rounds compared to a .22

(I think that that is a CB cap, not a BB Cap. The latter have actual BB's as projectiles). The thing on the bottom is a 9mm Parabellum which is what many lugers and many cop guns fire.

Still in business. :)

For now they (and a lot of Swiss) are protesting an "adjustment" of national weapons law to comply with EU law:

August 1939. "Pelican Bay Lumber Company. The burner is as characteristic of the Northwest landscape as grain elevators are to the Plains. There are many types of variations. It is an essential part of the sawmill. Disposes of sawdust and waste. Near Klamath Falls, Oregon." Photo by Dorothea Lange.
A reader comment:
There's Gold In Them There Sawdust Now.

When I worked for Georgia Pacific the sawdust was collected as logs and plywood panels were cut to size and sucked outside to a waiting freight car to be sent someplace where there must have been a deficit of sawdust.

Unused wood, bark and damaged panels was also processed in a grinder and reduced to splinters before being sent off. There was very little waste generated.

I always imagined the sawdust was sent to Pringles and combined with potato mush to be made into Pine Cone Delight Potato Chips.

Did someone really think that would happen or is it supposed to be a joke?

Hard to say, but no less an anti-suffragette than G.K. Chesterton feared it would weaken the institution of marriage by making divorce more common.

If someone claimed that now, it would be post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy. :notsure:

The weakening of that particular "institution" might be a benefit for humanity though.

(my thoughts about the institution itself should not be misinterpreted as dissatisfaction with my own marriage.)
