Opera clips.
As a newbie, am I allowed? I can't find any opera threads, so I thought I'd start one. Not that I am a fantastic fan - I just like a good tune and a bit of sentimentality. (It's not against the law, afaik.)
Several years ago I came across this duet from Korngold's "Die Tote Stadt". It was very well-known in the 1920s, but faded. It is one of those tunes that have stayed with me since I heard it. There are two decent versions that I've found on YT, and this, to me, is the better, though I'm not mad on the tenor's voice. (Don't bother too much with the plot - he strangles her in the end.)

The pics are of Salzburg, but the opera is set in Bruges.

If you could post that rare footage of Caruso singing "Nesun dorma," . . .

Re: Opera clips.
Our local theater has showings of operas televised from the Metropolitan Opera in New York. I went and saw one about a month or so ago. It was a showing of Prince Igor and I enjoyed it.
The thing is, though, that I don't speak Russian and if I ignored the subtitles, it was even MORE entertaining, because rather than the story of a Russian Prince overcoming defeat and betrayal, it became the story of Russian William Riker leaving Winterfell to go off to war with his sidekick, Young Benny Hill, leaving the kingdom in charge of his stern matronly girlfriend and John Lovitz. They wake up in a field of poppies where they meet the girl from My Big Fat Greek Wedding who promptly lures Young Benny Hill away. Russian William Riker encounters his stern matronly girlfriend again and they sing a duet only to be interrupted by Lex Luthor who is cosplaying as Colonel Mustard from Clue. They get into an argument and Luthor, evil villian that he is, decides to make Riker go crazy by making him have to deal with dancing hippies for a whole half hour or so. Meanwhile John Lovitz decides that HE should be Lord of Winterfell and stages a coup. Sadly, we all know what happens to thing when you put John Lovitz in charge of things so something blows up and Winterfell collapses killing John Lovitz. Then Riker comes back and realizes that he fucked up leaving an SNL cast member in charge of Winterfell so he tries to hide, only some peasants find him and force him to cooperate in rebuilding. The end.
Seriously, though, I did enjoy it and will probably go see another one soon

A clip featuring two great voices from the 1950s. Lovely stuff.

Leck mich im Arsch (literally "Lick me in the arse") is a canon in B-flat major composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, K. 231 (K. 382c), with lyrics in German. It was one of a set of at least six canons probably written in Vienna in 1782. Sung by six voices as a three-part round, it is thought to be a party piece for his friends.

Strange, "goaty" version by Nella Anfuso here (where I got the details): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljoZxB95LD4Julia Lezhneva sings one of the favorite arias of the castrato Carlo Broschi called Farinelli (1705-1782): "Son qual nave ch' agitata". It is the aria of Arsace from act III / scene 1 and was composed by Farinelli's brother Riccardo Broschi (c 1698-1756). Farinelli sung this center showpiece, inserted in the pasticcio ARTASERSE with music by Hasse, Attilio Ariosti, Nicola Porpora and Riccardo Broschi, given 29th october 1734 in the theatre at the Haymarket marking his debut in London.

Puccini's "Vissi d'arte" with the wonderful Angela Gheorghiu. Mimed of course, but deliciously faggy. :)

Have to disagree with you: Orff carpet bombed the Carmina Burana. For another point of view,
– a page from the original manuscript:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... _wheel.jpg
– the Clemencic Consort version (nearly 4 hours!):

but that's of course not "opera" in the canonical sense.
Have also a look at the "Nazi era" part of his Wikipedia page.

I've not been here for a while, but I just know everyone here will love this. When I played it on the "joanna" as a kid, it was just Handel's "Largo". "Ombra mai fu".

Re: Opera clips.
Welcome back.
I don't mind the music or singing, but to really appreciate opera I would have to learn a new language.
And I suck at learning languages. I had a very hard time trying to learn to count to ten in Korean. When I try to pronounce French words, my wife covers her ears and screams at me to just stop.
Math, no problem. Science, no problem. Hell, I even aced English and writing courses. History, I soak it up. Foreign languages....F Every time.
We all have our strengths and weaknesses.
But I would have to know wtf is being said. Doesn't work for me otherwise.
But I love hearing a good voice. I liked Jesus Christ Superstar. Showboat was a little long for me. Wicked was very good, and, of course, so was Spamalot. I watched Phantom, and it had its moments. Joseph wasn't bad, but a little preachy. Dunno if they qualify as opera, though.

Choir audio is being edited. When it's done, up on Soundcloud it goes.
Maybe I'll post the link in this thread. I dunno.

I'm not really a Mozart fan, but I appreciated this:

Another classic, "Frost scene" from Purcell's King Arthur (original for bass):

Love the Wagner clip, AC. Here's a big toon from Pukkini.

So, just got back from watching The Opera version of Macbeth. It was pretty good, the woman who played Lady Macbeth had just the right combo of arrogance and malice to her to make a good Lady Macbeth. And the guy who played Macduff looked like Liev Schrieber. Overall, I enjoyed it.

Some creepy religious music!
Nice chicks, good recording, strange conductor. And I can't forget that Pergolesi died at age 26…
(Complete version, but listen at least to the first part, worth 4 – 5 min of your life.)
