Heard the first bit of audio from the CD that is coming out 2015-08-14, to coincide with Closest Approach.
Maybe the CD should be titled Closest Approach. Nah. Anyhow, the orchestra sounds good.

We were supposed to start getting pictures already. Word on the street is that there's nothing to see yet—it's just a dot, but the autonomous navigation system is using the dot for course corrections.

Pluto and Charon orbiting each other, shot by NH a couple weeks ago and downlinked to Earth some time since then.

Don't we now know enough about the solar system, all its moons and asteroids, plutoids, Abdul's anuses and the rest to have concluded that there's fuck all out there of any value to humanity?

Re: On the way to Pluto at last!
Seriously, when I was a very wee camel, my mother made my brother and me watch the first moon landing, (I was four years old), and told us we must remember this because it was so important. I complied, and it's one of the few memories of early childhood that remain in my aging noggin. It also inspired a great interest in space exploration and love of science fiction.Doctor X wrote:You may diminish the importance of Uranus. . . .
--J.D.
The love of science fiction has not faded but my interest in space exploration has gradually faded to almost zero.
"Yeah, yeah, you found another rock, well done guys. ZZZZZ"
Just about sums it up.

Re: On the way to Pluto at last!
When I was that age, I thought we were all going to space really soon. So I worried about things that depend on gravity to function, like cars, and cups, and grand pianos.
Later, I got nauseous from riding an airplane through turbulence. It dawned on me that space would be like that. :Green: :BlowChunks: :oldman:

Hmmm. Now you've got me wondering if harmonicas would work in zero gravity.

Sicko.
I was wondering if it would be possible to eject a multicoloured yawn through all ten holes of a diatonic harmonica at the same time.
On second thoughts, perhaps it's me who's the sicko.

For your entertainment, I took these pics at Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry. They really do have a large model Enterprise hanging from the ceiling in the aircraft hall. :)

That's a big bucket of Science being mixed up with a bunch of science fiction. It is a museum of science, right?

Heh. It's actually a fantastic museum, trains, planes, automobiles, all sorts of industrial machinery including rebuilt, working steam engines, a mock up of Roman sewer works and much, much more. It does incorporate the very special Mancunian sense of humour.
Here's a few more for you.

Another photo has been released. It has about twice the resolution of the photo from a month ago. Pluto definitely has features.
